One knife a night over a period of time adds up!

I've been hammering steel for about a month and a half. This is what I have forged out now. I think I'll switch gears and get them cleaned up and ready for heat treat. What do you think?

I took a page from Raymond Richards book on how to keep them stored between processes. It works out great to have them hanging like this. Thanks Ray!

Wish I had that many to play with, but I can only manage a feeble blade or 2 before I feel the need to switch gears..

I can only work on one knife at a time from start to finish or else I'll lose interest. Couple of weeks ago I worked on two at a time and I didn't like it. I wish I could do it that way, it's more efficient.

I can do the indoor work anytime. It's the outdoor work that I have trouble scheduling sometimes. If it's raining (and it does rain quite often here in the Pacific NW) I can't forge too easily since I forge outside.

Plus, I've been trying to learn how the steel moves under the hammer. I figure if I keep trying different preforms and drawing the starting and ending shapes, I'll begin to get a handle on what is happening.

For example, the longest one in the picture is almost exactly what I intended to make. I'm so proud of that one I could nearly bust with pride!

Scott-

Sometime this summer after Blade show, we'll have to hook up. You can come up and pound some of your bearings out under a 100# Little Giant or the Carlisle Press :D

I'll even let you forge on my Gladiator so long as I get to cut one of your fingers off if you ding it up ;)

I have boxes, buckets, and crates full of blades. I'm like Ray, I lose interest too easily. But, unlike Ray, I never got it through my thick skull to not do it anyway.... So I always have about 10 knives going at once. I think 3 is a good number for fun and efficiency.

Now if I can just remember that!

BTW- I feel that's good thinking Scott... you get the forging down and the rest of it goes MUCH MUCH smoother.

Looks great Scott! I liked the largest one the best....before you even said anything.:D Love to see that one all done up.

Scott, What book is that? :D You got anymore cloth pins left? Thats a good idea. I've got at least 50 blades covered with other junk I need to get hung up so I can see them and not forget I have them. Nice to see you got the bug!

Nick, hope to see you in a few days.

I give credit, where credit is due. I saw that wire strung over your work bench with a few different knives hanging from it, and it didn't sink in until I had blades laying on every stinking work top in my shop. So, I strung up some wire I had, got some clothes pins, and no more clutter. The only problem is, that now that they're hanging like that, I tend to stand and stare at them. But, even that helps, since I sometimes get an idea on how to finish out the knife while standing and staring.

I'll definitely take you up on this generous offer. Thank you!

Good luck in Atlanta! I've been to the show, working the Timken Latrobe booth a few years back. I hope to some day have a table of my knives at The Blade Show.
