One knife for Christmas

My wife has given me a green light on one more folder for Christmas. I have 3 knives that I've owned and wish for one reason or another that I'd kept. I've sold these for various reasons. I don't do hard use but I dig my XM-18 and I don't have a light, slicing, folding knife at the moment other than a large CS Voyager which is low end but a pretty formidable slicer. I want a light sharp EDC. Which would you buy? The price is not an issue. :)

Here are my choices that I've narrowed it down to.

1. large Sebenza 21

2. ZT 0551 collaboration

3. Spyderco Military S30V G-10

I would vote for the Sebenza , especially since you have the Hinderer already, and you're looking for a lighter knife.

I tend to agree since the Military will always be around for awhile anyway. Thanks

The Military will outslice both of those knives. 4" of full flat ground S30V. And it's the lightest.

Military for sure, best cutting tool ever made, YMMV.

All the knives mentioned are nice but I would go for something smaller and lighter. Something around 4 1/2 inches closed and no more than 4 oz. Like a Spyderco Stretch CF or Spyderco Sage or Paramilitary 2 or Yojimbo if you can find one. Or maybe a IKBS flipper custom.

I'm with Handwrecker and Knifenut1013 on their Millie recommendation. I have both a large Sebbie and several Millies and my Militarys will easily outslice the Sebbie. I also find that they're easier to maintain in that condition with a Sharpmaker and a strop. A ZDP189 Caly 3 or Stretch will also be an excellent lightweight slicer.

If you like AXIS locks, Doug Ritters' S30V Grips are good at this as well. Either size gives you a blade that's thin enough for slicing well and pretty easy to maintain with a Sharpmaker and a strop.

From your list I'd pick the Sebenza. I prefer the regular Seb for slicing tasks because the blade has more belly than the 21. And I'd pick a Satin finish blade.

But if "price is not an issue", then get a custom Hinderer 3.5" XM-18 slicer smooth CF Non-Flipper. :)

Now, I don't own a Sebenza, so I may well be talking out of me arse, but I do know the Military and it is a remarkable knife. At first blush, it looks huge, but the way it can disappear into a pocket is downright spooky. As has been mentioned, it is an excellent slicer, in fact I used one to slice-up a roast turkey last Christmas and the Millie is often pressed into kitchen duty.

It seems to me that the Sebenza and the Military are in a class of their own. My thinking is that if you want a knife to use, go for the Military. If you want a knife to cherish, it is hard to beat a Sebenza.

You have my vote for a Sebenza...I have one and love it! I ordered a damascus blade to replace my S30V blade (I will swap out the damascus for the S30V when I'm hunting)...from the pics I have seen it is going to look deadly.

Have you decided yet?

The military will out slice the Sebenza.

But with the Sebenza's awesome hollow grind it ain't no slouch either.

Out of those three knives, I'd be picking up the large Sebenza 9 times out of ten.

Edited to add: If your wife is buying this knife for you, go with the Seb. It will make it all the more special.

Darnnit! I passed on the Sebenza and bought the Military due to recommendations on it's superior cutting abilities. I had a new one lined up w/o the Idaho Made stamp on it too. I wish you johnny-come-lately posters would have posted a couple days ago. :(

I think I'll be more than happy with the Millie though - I like longer blades and they're both S30V.

I already have my XM-18 but it's a flipper. Why would anyone want to pass on a great feature like the flipper/handguard?

..IMO a slicer grind on the XM-18 possess different cutting capabilities (and behaves differently) than the spanto grind. Non-Flipper XM-18 is a little pocket friendly, easier to EDC so to speak. And the smooth CF handle is just so cool on these knives, making it more of a gentleman's knife. The XM-18 in this configuration is like a Sebenza and XM-18 in one knife. Just my $.02

pm me your email address and I can help direct you where to find one..

anyway, Congrats on the Millie. That is a big and awesome knife for the buck.

I see your point now that you describe your XM-18. That's a very classy knife and the sum is greater than the parts of a RIL, very sharp grind and the CF scale. Sounds really nice.

I'm getting early dementia :D and missed that you'd mentioned all of that. Makes sense to go non-flipper.

Ordered my Millie on Amazon (free shipping and easy returns) and it hasn't processed yet, plus the guy still has the Sebenza - what to do - what to do?

That's easy -- Sebenza!

Haha I would hurry up and cancel the Millie order and grab that non-Idaho stamped Sebbie since those are all pretty much gone now unless you buy them used. That is if the Idaho stamp bothers you. If not just get whatever you please, you cant go wrong with either.
