You wouldn't be lost if you had only a small fixed blade. As long as it's stout. You can chop wood very effectively with a smaller blade by using a chunk of wood as a baton to hammer on the spine. However, a larger blade and especially an axe would be more effective in such situations where you had to dig deep into the heartwood of a tree to get dry tinder during a wet spell.

If you only get ONE knife, then I'd have to say neither. A medium knife would probably bridge the gap the best between more delicate work like carving notches in sticks, and larger chores.
...Of course, everyone has a different opinion of what a medium knife is!!
While I'll have to agree with both of the other posters here, I would still go for the larger knife if I had to make the choice.
I guess that it's just a matter of preference after all.
Hell, I consider a 9" bowie to be of medium size.
For survival I would pick a large fixed blade knife. You can chop with the large knife which you usually can't with a small one and if you need to do delicate works you can always choke up on the knife.
