One knife to rule them all!! If you were given only ONE

I find myself quite amused by realizing that most of us wish we could be like the old timers. In my experience my grandfather had one pocket knife. Only ONE! and he could whittle, carry and eat with it very often. It was small enough that he would go from dress pants to jeans and back without switching it. Soo.. here is a small experiment for all of us knife lovers out there.

If you were asked to give up all your pocket knives away and were left with only one for the rest of your life... which one would it be? and why?

I am finding myself torn.. I usually carry a case peanut and sometimes a sodbuster jr to fill out some of the roles the peanut can't do. So I looked at a GEC boys knife. So far it seems to me like the best midpoint since it has a big enough blade to replace the sodbuster jr in my pocket (food prep and some cutting) and a pen blade small enough to replace my peanut (I love the size for whittling). I really want to see how long I can go with this knife and ONLY this knife as a pocket knife. So far it is funny to catch myself reaching for the peanut and Sodbuster jr. I think it may be because I miss the peanut's bone handles. It is starting to make me think that maybe the previous pair I was a better choice.. but I digress. I wish I was more like my grandfather and just make due and be able to stick with my decision.

What knife would you pick for yourself and why? Is there some other knife in your collection for which you may develop withdraw syndrome?

Photos are very welcome!

Thank you everyone for your comments. I think that I found the one that I am looking for The TC Barlow.. Just like the one my grandfather had with him for so long. However it is a bit out of range in price.. I really hope I can find someone with an extra one and with a big heart. I don't want anything for free but maybe they would be willing to trade it for my humble current collection of knives. I know that one will be the one for me to end it all. I forgot to mention that I did the test with the A&son knife I had before to see if the size of the GEC is appropriate and I know it will be perfect with the clip point blade.

The peanut and sodbuster jr are going to be part of the gift pack for the groomsmen in my upcoming wedding. I know they will love them.

Interesting post, having just one EDC knife for life is definitely something I like to ponder, it's an idea I really like, even if I'm fairly certain it won't happen :D

Tough, tough choice, but perhaps one of these

Is the second one an ebony? Having both which one do you prefer the ebony or the red bone (GEC)? I have had some impulses to buy the bone handle but I have kept myself composed. I heard wood would take a fall or some other factors of age better than bone, thats why I purchased the #15 in ebony, but now I am not sure.

The wood is actually cocobolo - I've never had cocobolo so dark, but I like it. It does look like ebony, but in certain light, there are reddish highlights.
I love wood handles, but I also love the texture of jigged bone, so it's a tough call....

Oh now I see some of the reddish highlights you mention. Great scales and yea I love how GEC makes wood scales. I wish I could settle for only one.. I am hoping that if I force myself to use only one and hide the rest one of two things will happen: 1. I will go through a brief collector's withdraw effect and once past the hump it will be better. 2. I will end up thinking "maybe I don't have enough knives, since they are all put away" and end up buying more haha

Very tough call. For me it's down to 2....

or the 85 in cocobolo

I do tend to think about it every so often, and I'd say that 7 times out of 10 the 85 gets the nod....so I guess that would be my keeper.

But you did choose a nice one, the #15's are really great

I think it would be this one for me... my trusty, well used and loved GEC #66 Serpentine Jack

Actually I´ve been carrying this knife for about nine months as my only knife. It was the time before I discovered GEC ;)

I only used one for 36 years, my Case Slimline trapper, in yellow delrin and CV. So I know it could handle it all now too.

 That´s quiete a time! It would be great to hear how it performed and how the knife you carried for so long looks like now.

It's pretty much become my default work knife already. Why? Well the frame size is pretty much perfect for my hands, offering enough to grip onto yet still is comfy in the pocket. The rounded G10 scales are comfortable and the depth of the handle is just right too, offering enough to feel solid yet your pinkies can get round it. You can also completely strip it down and clean it and it's built like a tank.

D2 means providing I don't ding it it holds an edge well.

Would I change anything? Well some Ironwood scales would be nice and possibly a clip blade.

Only one, period, so if I lose it or it gets broken I have to gnaw through things with my teeth? Or am I allowed to replace it if something happens to it? Makes a difference on how many blades and how big it is. :) Has to be from my existing collection?

So, this is for pocket knives, then. I'd still have kitchen knives and utility knives for eating and home improvement projects.

I'd have to say this Case Mini Trapper Wharncliffe. It's a good pocketable size with two full length useful blades of different types.

It's close between that and a 63032 Medium Stockman, but if it was my one knife forever I'd want stainless steel blades, and my only 63032 is the Chestnut Bone CV model.

The funny thing is, though that would be my "one knife", I never carry it. My carry knives include the Chestnut Bone CV Medium Stockman, a 62032 CV Small Texas Jack, a SS Mini Copperhead, and a SS Russlock.

haha! teeth and nails if you break it.. no I'm just kidding. What I mean is basically sticking to one knife that you see as both long lasting and fit for almost anything you could throw at your pocket knife. I suppose if you dropped it on the floor and broke it then you could replace it.

Search "cult of the peanut" before the cult gets mad.

Yes, we know the correct answer is "peanut" even though a mini copperhead is better. Now to answer the OP question, my pick for the knife to end all would be a "Bullwinkle" moose or "Furtaker" on the GEC 66 frame or possibly a Western Outlaw.

I don't have such a knife yet, so in the interim a GEC 66 jack or 62032 Case Texas jack or the large Case wharncliffe trapper would get the nod.

That is exactly what I am talking about. I always feel that having a small covert full with knives becomes counter productive. Do you still use the case slimline trapper?
