One knife to rule them all!! If you were given only ONE

Only one answer makes sense. The TC Charlow, ebony covers with clip and pen blades

Agreed same here.

This would be the one.

As much as I love my knives (Opinel 8, GEC #73L and Northwoods Bullet Jack), my most used one is actually my Victorinox Explorer. After having owned 200+ knives and having to sell all but the above listed due to family matters, I have realized I can do 90% of all of my cutting needs with a SAK. The Victorinox Explorer is my favorite model and is carried almost 24 hours a day. Now if I ever can find my grail knife - the Bladeforums 2011 Traditional Knife, that would be the one for me for life.

For me it would be my Scagel fruitport. This knife has been used a lot and has been with me for some really big things in my life. It has a lot of sentimental value and I find it has its own kind of charm :)
An old picture, it looks a little more grey these days :)

I wonder what makes so many of us so fascinated with the idea of being a one knife person. I'm guilty of romanticizing about having that one knife in my pocket that has been my constant companion for years and years, but Im not sure why. I mean if I really thought that was such a great idea, I'd stop buying new knives, right? Anyway, I think it would have to be this guy.

Since I collect the SwayBack Jack's it would be one of them or really any of the good knives with a Wharncliffe Blade that I have owned through the years.!**

Being a relatively new knife knut I have hands on experience with relatively few knives/patterns and I don't want to speculate about my one and only knife based on knives I haven't used, but even considering knives I haven't tried I think Id still pick my GEC Bullnose as my one and only pocket knife if I had to do so. For a pocket knife a second blade would be ideal both as a backup (but how likely is it, realistically for my circumstances that I'll break off or so badly damage a blade that it's not immediately usable) and to have smaller blade for detail work like when whittling. But the blade is sturdy and while it is a bit big for detail work, and the tip is not ideally shaped for it, it suffices in that role. Besides, if it had a second blade, it wouldn't be a sodbuster anymore :D And it's a big enough blade to handle any task that a knife is meant for.

If we were to broaden the selection to include fixed blades, and remove the concerns about laws (which I'm luckily not restricted by in this case) and workplace policies (ugh) then a small fixed blade would be my one and only knife. A pocket knife I'll choose one not made by my own hand, but for a fixed I'd rather make it myself (which I don't have the skills or resources for, yet). Then it would be around 3" blade, a handle that could just comfortably accommodate a full four finger grip, 1095 or O1. Probably a patch knife style. Wooden handle but not sure which kind, maybe maple or walnut. My tastes in wood vary enough that I couldn't pick one spur of the moment like this.

Edmundo,
I will twist the question a bit, and answer you this.
I own only a few knives, and they all get pocket time and use. Should I just have to keep one, anyone could make the choice for me, cause any of my knives would do. After all, the simple fact of carrying a nice and quality knife is more than enough for me.
Although, to be honest, in the upcoming few weeks I'm going to receive a knife which could force my answer to change

You really want us to wait a few weeks to find out what knife that is? Tell us! :)

I feel the same way Fausto.. Carrying a knife is for the sake of having a tool available and pretty much anything sharp will do if it needs to. However, I find a feeling involved when carrying a pocket knife. There is a weird bond that I feel gets created and I see this even stronger in people like my grandfather who only had one (at a time, i suppose he may have replaced it once). Perhaps that is what everyone is looking for and why people keep buying many types and styles of knives, but I am starting to think that it is not the knife that needs to be perfect but us that need to settle and make what we have do the job. What do you think?

PS: don't leave us hanging for that loong! haha

If I recall correctly, one is able to change the covers on this one, yes? Is ironwood in the realm of possibility, especially given some of the custom work we've seen here and yon? (No idea how you'd swap a clip blade in, but the sides would be a start. ;)

I've got some tasty stag scales for weekends:)

I'd have a crack at the scales myself. The blade I'd ask Shing to make. Wouldn't be too tricky as the Puffin is a set pattern.

Money and time are the factors, as always....:)

I could easily live with about 50 different ones of my knives for my only one, but am sure glad I don't have to!

This Northfield red stag #72 would be near the top of the heap.

I could probably get along pretty well with one of the two I carry every day. It would be a tough choice between my ebony single blade Charlow or my 73. Both are just about perfect for carry, but I carry both at the same time. Strange, but I don't care. They get used.

Can't fault either of those choices. Coincidentally those are also the only two GECs that I own. GEC's best IMO.

Jeff...that is a beautiful #72! Love everything about it. Top of the heap for very good reason.

Between the late 70's and the early 90's I went for at least a decade carrying the same knife every day. It was a Camillus-made Buck 303. It satisfied all my cutting needs.

I still have that old one, but I think if I were limited to one knife I might choose a new Buck 303. Large enough to be useful. Small enough not to be a bother. Built like a miniature tank. And I like the Buck 3-spring design better than the Camillus 2-spring design.
