One knife.

I will probably go with a custom large dagger. Possibly a leaf blade, love leaf blades but have neither a nice dagger or leaf blade.

it doesn't max out your budget, but you might wanna look at some of Bark River's offerings. the Smoke Jumper is a pretty sexy fixed blade with a metal gaurd (IIRC)

$600? - just buy the ESEE line up and your set for LIFE!

That's what I did and even a few as spares. I do not regret getting any one of them. I do have my favorites though ; a particular fondness for the 3 ,4 , and 6.
I have been looking for my ultimate woods blades for a long time before I discovered Esee. There are a few minor things I wish were different ,but all in all they have performed flawlessly for any task I've put them through. Really a great knife for the money I can totally depend on.

If I had to start over with $600 , I'd get the 3 , 4 , 6 , and Junglas. That would cover a lot of bases and I NEVER have to worry about warranty issues. EVER.
:)

Sounds like a new Fallkniven NL1 is right for you. KnifeWorks has them for $450 which leaves enough money for a Junglas, RC-4 or one of the big Beckers. :D

Here's your pic:

Cold Steel Peace Keeper I - Fixed 7" VG-1 San Mai III Blade, Length: 12 1/3", Secure-Ex Sheath.

Slightly leaf shaped, badass dagger for $100. I had one for 20+ yrs and sold it for twice what I paid for it - before they re-introduced it again. Really good for nothing but "operators" on a budget...lol :D

Scary sharp and a superb grip too!

Take a look at the Al Mar Shiva...
That one is on my wish list for this year.

Happy New Year !

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, thought I would post the progress on this I have made.

I want a larger dagger, most likely custom, probably minimum of ten inches, with a leather or wooden handle and a metal finger guard. Dagger doesn't have to be double edged, though I really like leaf blades. To bad a Busse Gladius if above my budget, though if it had more classical handle material I would probably get it anyway, if I could find one.

Maybe you can find a Boker Smatchet or a Bark River Clax on the used market, or just get a custom.

Randall was one of the first things I looked at, just didn't find anything that really tickled my fancy. Maybe I should start another threat looking for a custom maker.

Shamelessly bumping this thread one last time before I just let it die. I would really like to hear some more opinions.

Thought about the sebenza, but want a fixed blade. The Busse AK47, hadn't thought of that, don't think I will find one inside my budget though. Wish I could.

Look at the Waki. I think its made by Swamp Rat, which is a Busse company. A LOT CHEAPER and very good!!!

Sorry that doesn't really fit my tastes, nor is it what I am looking for. I want something longer, I would really like a sword, but I doubt I will find one in my price range. So really large fighting knife is what I am looking for.

Knives Illustrated just did a review on some not so well known custom makers in this December 2010 issue. Many of them list their knives starting in the $150 range and went up from there. All were fixed blades and some were even dagger styled. There was also a review of a couple of swords in the issue as well. You should check it out.

Thanks for all the advice, but I have done some thinking and have decided that instead I will get off my lazy bum and finally learn to make knives like I have always wanted to.

Well that'll sure solve your dilemna. Your $600 budget can be put toward equipment that will assist you in making your fantasy knife dreams come true.

Personally, I'm gonna stay on my lazy bum and let the pros crank out my blades. Good luck! :)

second almtiba. The Al-Mar Shiva is awesome. I own one and it is nicer than a Busse AK47, which I also own. My fave fixed-blade. This is a knife I would carry in a zombie onslaught. JMO
