One more advice question. Heavy folder.

It's been a while since I did some research on this category. I am looking for a large, heavy duty folder, which would have a "street" price of about $100.00. I realize this narrows things down. Want about 3.5 to 4.0 inch blade. Not tanto type though.

Any thoughts?

Two models come to mind right off.

1. Zero Tolerance ZT 200
2. Cold Steel Recon 1 with Tri-ad

I'm sure others will chime in with more to choose from.

The best ones I can think of would be the Spyderco Gayle Bradley and Paramilitary 2, Zero Tolerance 0200 and 0350, Benchmade 710, and Al Mar SERE.

ZT0200 would be the best option for a 3.5-4inch heavy folder at around 100 IMO

Cold Steel TriAd locks are as heavy duty as they get.

Heavy duty
ZT 0200
Cold Steel American lawman

For better cutting ability but equal lock strength.
Para 2
BM Grip

I have the ZT 0200 and love it, but want one more heavy folder. Heard great things about BM 710 but haven't picked up one. Does CS Lawman come only in the black coated version?

The 710 and lawman will not outperform the 0200 in any way. I have owned all three. But was less than impressed by the cutting ability of the lawman. And the blade on the 710 is no that heavy duty,
The only way your gonna do much better is to spend a little more cash. Like a Pro Rock star, hest, 0300 etc.. Or buy a knife that is more of a slicer than the 0200.

If you want something different than you might want to go with a slicer as trimcut said. I think the Gayle Bradley would be your best option for that. It has a thin high hollow grind that slices better than anything else I have, but the knife is actually quite robust. The liners are super thick, lockup is unyielding, and the steel is about as tough and wear resistant as you can get.

I don't know if you get the ZT 200 for $100.00 anywhere. I recommend the ZT 350.

The Spyderco Manix 2 is another good bet.

Try GP knives for ZT and Benchmade knives. Once you use the coupon code they give you, you'll end up paying less than MAAP pricing for the knife. They're the cheapest dealer I've found for those brands, and they're Bladeforums dealers as well.

Truth.

Just got the ZT 0200 a couple weeks ago. Beside some issues I had with it I ended up trading it back at the store for the 0350 since the 0200 was more knife than I care to EDC. It's a big knife (for me anyways), and I much prefer the size of the 0350, which is also cheaper. You should be able to get it for just over $100.

Not looking for a particular steel, but do prefer a larger blade. I am trying to find something which I can carry in my pocket, with a pocket clip, and yet be stout enough to use on the trail to cut and slice small branches, etc. I am now considering that I need to either expand the budget or branch out a little more in the search to consider blades I had not thought of previously, such as the Hogue. Also really the Emerson CQC series but would require more money.

I have a Spyderco Military and CS Recon 1 (triad) next to me. Just compared them and the Recon 1 is light yet just a hair heavier than the Military.

Both are stabbing safe in the grip department with plenty of handle space. Millie come in at about $125 and the Recon 1 was about $70's I'm pretty sure.

The Recon 1 would be the more stout of the two - your use might not require it though. The Recon 1 is a smidge longer blade (comparing only the "sharpened portions" of the 2 blades).

Both have very grippy G-10 handles.

I's recommend either one of these.

Check out the Benchmade Bone Collector, It's as solid and sturdy as they come for the price point. Shop around and you should be able to get one for under $100

Buck CSAR. Big and heavy, not a slicer, better for chopping and prying. Should be able to find it <100 or close.

Sorry. The blade is kind of a tanto design. :o
