I was watching this auction (that has now ended, so I can link it) out of curiosity. The knife is said to be one of a kind and Benchmade couldn't even say why it was made with a gold handle. Anyway I found it a bit crazy this knife would bring over 400 dollars and the company that produces them would not be able to verify anything on it. Thoughts?

Could someone possibly had it re-annoed?

If Benchmade couldn't say they produced it, I sure wouldn't have paid that sort of cash for it. It seems that whomever bought it trusted the seller's word pretty far. He claimed it came from New Graham, which is as reputable of a dealer as can be. If that's so then I would say it is genuine. Still $408.00 is a lot of money for that model!

Note to self, buy gold spray paint... get 940 from drawer...

Thoughts?

There's a sucker born every minute?

OK, here are some others:

(1) If I just wanted a gold 940 I could buy one and have it reanodized for less that $400
(2) If I wanted to buy a knife as a collectable investment I wouldn't buy one the factory doesn't definitively acknowledge making.

The response from Benchmade leads me to believe it's a fake. But, the seller got $400+ out of it, so he doesn't care.

I thought it very strange that he'd provide correspondence saying BM had no knowledge of the knife, and yet have bidders go nuts.

Well, the way eBay is anymore the buyer can easily get 100% of his money back. If he chooses to.

Is it possible that New Graham had it specially done? The seller states he bought it from them. Maybe a PM to Michael Dye from NGK is in order. Maybe he remembers it.

24k gold plated handle scales yes. Gold anodized I am with you man. Whats in a color. Benchmade having no record of it. Just seems like a con to me. He "says" it came from New Graham but so what I came from mars.

The thing that's going to bug me is whether it's actual gold handles or just gold anodized. If it's the latter, I feel sorry for the sucker who bought it.

IIRC, we purchased this from MGE, a Benchmade distributor, back when we were in the graces of the powers at BM. It was a test run of a color that did not go into production. I don't recall if the knife came in a generic BM box without a label, but it may well have. md

Thanks much for the insight.

that's interesting.

I actually considered sending my old 940 off to the anodizers that did a couple of my aluminum yoyos. they said that they could blast and re-anno without altering the finish or tolerances all that much, would have cost me $25 +S/H.

i didn't want to void warranty, but i was close to it. it's surprisingly difficult to find good blue knives, and a midnight blue with black in the grooves 940 is pretty appealing.

A bit off-topic, but where do you get your aluminum yo-yo's?
