after reading another post on light-weight packs.. i thought i would share one of my favorite pieces of kit with you folks.. :)

they are the flat plastic chopping/cutting mats.. they are simple and light-weight, and come in many different sizes..you can buy them at most stores and specialty kitchen stores...
i carry one of these in each of my packs and am rarely without one on the trail.. i use a small one in my REI flash 18 pack as a back panel and also to protect my back while carrying hard items..

i added holes in the corner of the smaller one to be used as a strainer.. they also serve many different purposes.. i.e. cutting mat, plate, strainer, splint etc. etc.

any other folks use one of these while out in the woods??

cheers.. Mike

I have a couple of those mats cut to fit my Remora and Lunada. They slip into the back panels and take up practically no space. Way useful for clean cutting surface, also makes a good funnel.

I bought a bunch of them at Ikea, $2 for a 2 pack, so a buck apiece. I can cover my kitchen island with them when I go to making a mess, sanding knife flats or working on some other hobby.

I use the same one also, I slip it in the water bladder pocket or in the larger pack in front of the back frame.

Thanks for the hint to drill a few hole as a strainer!

I bought ten of these with the Camp Chef logo and pics on them and gave all but two to everyone in my family. They were $1 each too. Funny thing is when I go to their houses for dinner they are always using these over the bulky ones for everything.

I have one that i got with my LMF meal kit. Its ridiciously small and the triangular shape leaves even less space. I almost never use it, as it struggles to fit one sliced tomato. Then imagine trying to make dinner on one!

Great idea, thanks for sharing it. BTW, I couldn't tell from your pics, but can you use different knives on them? : )

i use a rigid cutting board that i got fir $1 on closeout at Target. it's white, 8"x10" and about .2" thick.

can't really use those flexible ones to transfer stuff into the pan on the stove.

but that's for truck camping.

for ultralight/minimalist stuff i've never used a cutting board. even on backpacking trips back in the day when i got stuck hauling the 14" cast iron skillet.

I've been thinking about one of these. I have a tiny hard one in my kitchen kit, but since we're packing lighter I don't take the whole kit and it gets left behind. I use a Flash as a stuff bag and day-hike bag; it would work great as an improvised frame!

What are the dimensions Mike? I'll have to be on the look out for one that size,

Thanks for the tip:thumbup:

right on folks... many thanks for the kind words... i'm glad to pass this on to you all...:)

I agree with you Mike, they are a very handy piece of kit. I keep one in the bottom of each of my bags. Great around the kitchen, not a bad sit pad to keep a damp log from soaking your bottom either!

great idea!!! you inspired me to punch holes into my ultralight cutting boards to use them as strainers :D:thumbup: thanks mike!!!

brians i use the same gear as you except i use the "plate".

mike i really dig that strainer idea! nice job

G'day Mike

A great example of "minimalist maximus" :D

Minimal effort for maximum return

Kind regards
Mick
