Just wanted to let everyone know that Knifemaker Michael O'Machearley will be appearing on 60 Minutes, January 25th. Michael was a DHL employee when they decided to shut down DHL....60 minutes came into the town to do a segment on how the closing is affecting people. I don't have all of the specifics, but Micheal and his knifemaking are being featured on the show.

This is a good thing for all of us! Its going to expose Knifemakers to a nationwide audience. Make sure you watch 60 minutes on Jan 25th!

Thanks for the heads up, Ed. I put a sticky on our calendar so I won't forget.

Thanks for letting us know that Michael will be appearing on 60 minutes. I need to write that down or I will forget. Thanks again Ed. -------

I'm sorry to hear that Michael was caught up in the DHL layoff. I certainly hope this exposure benefits him and his family. Thank you for the heads up. I'll be sure to tune in that night.

I saw it tonight -- anyone else? His knife making was only briefly mentioned, and there was about 30 seconds of footage of him doing some forging, HTing, and leatherworking. However they interviewed him at length about the impact of the DHL plant closing, on him and his family. Very affecting, especially when he talked about losing his son in Iraq.

Is he a member here?

I just missed it! My father called me over but the segment was pretty much over.

I saw that and wondered if he was a member here...honestly I doubt it judging from what 60 min said of his home situation, I doubt he has internet (hope he does so he can join here and sell more knives).

BTW for any of those that missed it as said above they showed him working on forging, Heat treating, and leather working. He according to what 60min said sells custom engraved hunting knives.

Here is a link to CBS web site with jan 25 broadcast on it.

I've been talking to Michael since this whole thing started for him. There is no doubt that he, along with many others are experiencing very tough times. He's been trying, but he's not well versed in computers or the internet. I've been trying to push him to get more into the internet and forums....we'll see.

The next time I speak with him, I will ask if its OK to post his phone number.

I saw the episode and loved it. The whole show was really good. IMHO 60m as a show has no rivals in what they cover and how they cover it.

It hurts to see the heartland loose millions of jobs as (in)Thain wackos redo their offices for U$1.2M. I hope that as a country we have collective will and resolve to change so that the bloodbath we're living through now won't ever happen again. I better stop before I get completely off topic :)

i talked to mike the other day and he's going to be on 60 minutes again but doesnt know when. they are doing an update on him since their first interview. mike sent me an email this morning asking about coming up in a few weeks to meet me. maybe i'll help get him signed up as a member on the forum when he does.
