One Side Of Knife Handle Is Carbon Fiber

It's plenty strong ... but just a heads up ... it can chip if dropped ... I've only seen one but have heard others bring it up.

maybe im reading your last sentences incorrectly, but g10 with or without a carbon fiber top layer is quite strong. stronger than what a knife scale would need to be.
I guess my point is when people ask "how strong is CF?" it's not really the same as asking "how strong is a 1" x 2" section of extruded 6061-T6 aluminum bar?" That's because CF isn't one thing. We can be talking about structural carbon fiber (i.e., stronger than steel) or we can be talking about a 1/16" sheet of fiberglass with a thin veneer of carbon weave on top.

As for G10, I don't know enough about it to say how strong it may be. I'm just saying that when Spyderco (for example) sells you a knife with "carbon fiber" scales...you may actually be looking at G10 with a CF veneer on top. When it comes to CF, you kind of have to be more specific.

Interesting stuff ! But it's a fiber composite .How about some info on the resin !! Even the old fiberglass usually had problems with the resin . Deterioration from UV was a major problem. The there were two types , one with about 35 % glass and one with about 70 % glass [pultruded fiber glass ].

I've got a couple A.G. Russell pen knives with linerless carbon fiber handles. They're small knives, and the carbon fiber is thin.

Excuse the crappiness of the pics...

And here's a shot that shows how thin the CF is. That's a quarter in the 3" (closed) knife, and a penny in the 2".

If I squeeze hard enough (and I mean hard) I can get the scales to flex a tiny bit.

Most regular sized knives (like a Sebenza, Hinderer, ZT, etc) will have carbon fiber slabs 3-5 times as thick as these little guys. Trust me, the CF on a knife like that is more than strong enough to get the job done, and you'll never snap it short of judicious use of a ballpeen hammer or a vice and a monkey wrench.

Side note: I got the 3" CF A.G. Russell out of my mailbox about an hour ago. This little knife is simply awesome. Thin and light enough to fit in your wallet, and if you pocket it, you'll forget it's there until you need it. The blade is thin and hair-popping sharp. Heck, the blade-to-handle ratio is so high that the cutting edge is about 1/4" longer than that of my Spyderco Kopa (cocobolo, my go-to "classy" knife), despite having a handle 3/8" shorter. LOVE this thing!

Are you expecting the end of the world to happen some time soon? Quit worrying that you might not have made an informed choice, and just use the knife. If the end of the world DOES, by some chance, happen in our lifetimes, your knife probably isn't going to be enough to save you(tho IT will likely survive!). Sorry, but most of us are NOT going to live through it, no matter how much we hope we will, and no matter how prepared we think we are. So, there's that. Until then, if it breaks, send it back for repair, and retire it. Get yourself a fixed blade, a stout one, because you are not using the folding type of tool properly. It's for cutting stuff, not prying. And if it broke while you were cutting properly, it was defective. Or you have the tightest grip on the planet. USE the knife. ENJOY the knife. Find something important to worry about.

Get the 0804cf. I was hesitant but got it for a deal and couldn't pass it up. It's still extremely smooth and very solid, so much that it's one of my only folders I've had for over a year without taking apart. It's a very nice knife for sure. I have chipped a tiny piece of the cf off but it's not frayed or anything to worry about. Only complaint is there needs to be more gimping on the lock to disengage

Carbon fiber with lots of voids is very bad for structural pieces. So be aware of that. But otherwise cf will absorb shock and vibration to a point. But it def can chip and shatter depending on the variety of impact that can be made.

The majority of my collection is carbon fiber.

Let me just say that i have seen a picture of carbon fibre breaking around a knife stop pin
What were they doing with it?

There is definitely different ways to construct a knife with carbon fiber, some just make knives for looks rather than over engineered for heavy use.

I have a couple of few all CF knives and they don't flex at all. I have a Warren Thomas Beretta Avenger, All CF with a laminated VG10 and CF blade, a Gerber SL3.25CF and the ZT 077CF to name a few and all as stiff as steel or aluminum, I can't flex it. I'd recommend CF for one side or both, That's assuming you use it like a knife.

You wanna give me that Beretta Avenger?

Lol, is it as cool as I imagine it is? I have been amiring that knife for a long time. So you're saying it feels solid? I have always wondered about these carbon fibre bladed knives.

It (1st Gen Beretta Avenger) is light, quick and strong, as an SD backup? I'd trust it to perform flawlessly, it uses the same technology they use to make helicopter blades for IIRC the Apache attack helicopter.

Two things to take into consideration with this knife as far as usin' and carryin' it, first, it's not a prying knife, it's a purpose driven blade design and that single bevel chisel grind is a devastating slashing tool and it'll slide point first through the phone book like it was going through Styrofoam but it's not an EDC and if you carry it plan on it sitting in your pocket and hopefully never have to pull it out.

Secondly, I would not want to have used that knife to defend myself, hurt or killed my attacker and have to defend myself in court about how I carried a task specific knife called the Avenger, made from space age, stealth and metal detector defeating materials, carried it for years without using it till I had the opportunity to use it to "Take Out" the deceased. Doesn't matter how you spell it, the DA is gonna paint you as a terrorist hellbent on goin' to battle.

No not for me, I wanna be the guy who had defended himself with a knife called the FFBK (Fluffy Fuzzy Bunny Keeper) Who in their right mind would accuse you of bein' violent with a knife called that?
