Hey, John...
You can do 90% of the rough grinding using the platen on your 2 X 72. Using the 2 X 72 (running the blade at 90 degrees and lengthwise) and a 60 grit belt for the rough work will save a LOT of time. Finishing down to the point where the blade is ready to heat treat can be done on the disc grinder.
