Hey all!

So I've been on the hunt for a a great camp knife, I do a ton of overlanding/camping, been looking for a good camp knife for cooking or even breaking down small diameter wood. I had my heart set on the Nordsmith Canteen knife, but I'm pretty sure they're no longer making them. Was wondering if anyone else had a similar style nessmuk knife? TIA!

fiddleback forge has a nice camp muk, but it’s a little smaller than the canteen. also their camp or duke models are really nice!

:) Nothing wrong with your choice , per se .

I just prefer at least two knives for such use .

A big/long , heavy chopper for wood processing and clearing ( and/ or small camp ax or saw ) and a small blade for small chores .:thumbsup:

It's very inefficient to do both large and small work with the same blade . Plus , you have no backup if your only one is somehow lost to your use . :(

I should've worded my sentence better lol, when I meant small diameter wood, it would be more for batoning smaller already chopped wood (I do carry a small axe as well).

I’m a fan of Esee knives. They make a great Nessmuk (JG-5) that is perfect for all camp chores except probably batoning. They also make the PR-4 which is a Kephart that would work better for batoning along with every other camp chore. The PR-4 is not much to look at (kind of like a prison shank) but if I were to only have one for all the chores you mentioned, that would be it.

Cold War era West German GAK Has a 4 inch wood saw. An inch longer than that on the SAK Huntsman and Field Master.

How many generations of Scouts had one of these (or a "Demo Knife") as their only camp knife?

Hard to go wrong with a Buck 110.

If you insist on a non-folding knife, I'd suggest a Cold Steel FINN BEAR, or Mora Number 1, or other Puukko, if your budget covers one.
(sheath in middle is a very nice heavy leather sheath that fits both the FINN BEAR and Mora Number 1.)

I'll admit none of my suggestions are suitable to be batoned. (IMHO no knife is.)
If you must baton ... you said you have an axe or hatchet with you ...
Use your knife to carve/whittle a wedge from a piece of scrap lumber.
Use your axe, or hatchet, or Tommy Hawk, to start the split. Use the wedge to finish the split. :)

Welcome to BFs!

Do you have your heart set on the Nessmuk design or are you open to other blade profiles?

The only two that came to mind were already mentioned. The ESEE Nessmuk and the LT Wright. The LT Wright is too small imo.

Thank you!

I have my heart set the Nessmuk, been looking at the Essee JG5 for awhile, at the moment if I can't somehow get the Canteen Knife, next up is the Brisa and then the JG5 in 3rd. I love the handle shape on the JG5, but the blade is a bit bigger on the Brisa, both are about the same price.

Like the issakki jarvenpaa double leuku (large chopper and small puuko in a single sheath)
