Good day all

I'm looking to purchase a couple of GEC knives but the unreliable postal services into South Africa has prevented me from doing so.

I have a friend who is in business in Canada for a few weeks and was thinking of buying the knives through one of the online US stores and getting them shipped out to him.

Can anyone advice me on the issues associated with this. I've read that one should specify USPS for delivery, but are there any issues with importing knives into Canada (traditional folding knives) and are there any taxes or custom duties payable on collection?

I don't get it. once he gets the knifes how are you going to get it from him?? if he has to ship it doesn't he have to use the same shipping people that you would have to use to get them your self?? if that is the case then why don't you just have them shipped to you??

If the customs service stops the knives you have to pay 5% plus $5 for handling. In my experience maybe 5% get stopped so usually there is no charge. I have never seen a reason to lie on the forms.

I have never had any issues with having traditional knives shipped from the US to me in Canada. You may have to pay some duty. I believe I have been charged duty on only about 25% of the knives I have bought from the US? On a $300 dollar knife I paid about $300 duty. If you are charged duty, it will have to be paid at the post office when the knife is picked up.

Sorry, some mistakes in my last post. Paid about $30 duty on a $300 knife. And in retrospect have likely been charged duty on quite a bit less than 25% of my purchases.

He's over in Canada for work. He's coming back home to SA afterwards

Thats great info, thanks.

Does one just pay the duty at the post office when you pick up the parcel?

I am in Canada, and have contacts in SA.
Email me!

I have never paid duty on knives. I believe knives fall under NAFTA (free trade) I had to pay taxes on one large shipment.

Best regards

Robin

I am an Authorized GEC Factory Distributor. I have shipped to South Africa before and I have shipped to Canada.

The discussion forums are not a place to discuss buying knives. Moving to GBU.

I'll vouch for Bob Andrews from Old Hundred Collectibles.

I've bought several GEC knives shipped to Australia with no problems.

He's great to deal with and very helpful.

Cheers!

thanks for the feedback guys

Just a note, was looking for the policy on shipping traditional type knives to Canada from the US, wasn't looking to discuss buying knives.

There may or may not be additional fees involved. Hard to say with any accuracy.

Are you sure about this? I have had literally hundreds of items shipped to me from overseas (and sent a goodly number outbound) over an extended period and so far none have gone astray. I think this perception of the postal service is more of a myth than a reality, based on my experiences with it.
