Only One Knife for Everything, Forever!

Been brooding about this on and off.

It's a hideous scenario, life wouldn't be worthwhile....:(

But, the rules are the rules. I'd take a not too large puukko, stainless or carbon doesn't matter. The handle is genius, you can't slip, get too hot or cold with it.It's strong, but good for delicate work, easy to re-sharpen, absolutely versatile for woods work, hunting, fishing food prep and smaller tasks. Simple to clean&maintain. Doesn't weigh a tonne either like some bushcraft non slicing bayonet! The sheath is peerless, practical to wear or stow in a pocket, safe too. Most of them look damn nice as well:thumbup:

However, I'd be missing nearly all of my other knives great and small, cheap and costly. Fortunately, you do wake up from nightmares, at least....:D.

It can open a beer and slice a lime, what more does one need?

Well, considering you're in Plattsburgh, it should be able to adjust your X-C ski and snowshoe bindings. ;)

Ok.....so I think the original question is flawed, which is why it's such a tough/good question. I could rant and rave about different scenarios and why I would keep this knife or that knife, but I'm tired. So these are my thoughts....

1) Will a disaster ever occur and I need to kill zombies? If not, why do I want a zombie killer? If so, wouldn't I want a zombie killer?
2) will I hunt like I do now? If so, I don't want to crack a deer pelvis with my 3 inch trapper cuz then my one knife wouldn't last long
3) are there knife laws I need to worry about that would keep me from carrying the knife everyday? If there are then don't get in my way, cuz I'll knife fight you with my illegal 4.02 inch blade.
4) is there enough steel on the knife that I will still have a blade after sharpening it for 50 years? Can I collect the fine powder off my hone and in 50 years, melt it back into another knife because technically it would still be the same knife?
5) Am I allowed to have a manufacturer's warranty on my 1 knife so if I break it I can get a new one? Does that still count as my 1 knife?
6) If I decide on a fixed blade, I can't wear it with my suit. If I decide on a folder, I won't dare use a knife purse if I wear shorts with no pockets. Now that's just silly guys (sorry to Gus and others who wear purses)
7) Can I steal someone else's only knife if I don't like that person? If so, would I have to let someone steal mine so I will only have one knife? Can I tape or weld them both together so technically I would have a single, 2 blade knife (assuming they are fixed blades)
8) Is a can opener a knife? If it is, can I have a different knife but carry an electric can opener with me?
9) How do razors come into play? I get scruff burn when I try and shave with my knife because I'm a good sharpener but not a bad-ass sharpener.
10) What happens if my girlfriend loses her knife and she needs to cut up food for dinner or cut paper for my birthday present? I don't want to let her use one of my expensive knives because she will drop it like she always does and piss me off. So if that's the case, I should go with a cheap knife.

so.....all that being said............and yes you will probably be surprised.....I would go with something like this. It's a larger folder, it locks, it has synthetical scales for durability, its stainless so it's corrosion resistant, and it is comfortable in the hand.

But if I'm gonna kill zombies, then I'll get rid of the wimpy bullet and keep my Gossman Tusker

A corkscrew

And if I could only have........
A 4 1/4 " stockman in the form of a Queen Cattle King in D2 would do me okay

I've come to the conclusion that there is no answer to the OP's question. Heck, even the cavemen had a rock or piece of obsidian handy (right at their feet actually) should something happen to their piece of sharpened rock or obsidian. Holding us to one knife for everything forever just isn't practical. Soooooooooo, I'll continue to carry one knife in each front pocket and a Leatherman multi-tool on my belt every day.

What can I say Jeff. I've got to keep all my options open.

It's been a darn good thread though. Hopefully, others will chime in.

This is a really tough question. Honestly I don't think I'd pick a traditional pattern (probably go with my beat up cold steel american lawman) But if I had to choose only one knife to do all my knife stuff and it had to be a traditional I'd probably lean towards the Buck 110. But I also like the ideal of a boy scout of campers pattern. More tools is usually a plus for me.

Only one. Much as I like carbon steels I'd have to pick stainless for the ease of maintainance. No supersteels! Something I learned from the Inuit in the high Arctic sharpenability is FAR more important than edge holding. I'm assuming this is a day-to-day EDC knife that will be occasionally pressed into service for tougher tasks. A history of reliability will be factored and a selection of blades will be considered. I could settle for two blades if one is a sheepsfoot/wharnie and the other is a clip, but I only have that configuration in one knife and it is a bit delicate. So three blades it is...

Alright, I'm loving the knife selection and application but I hope you're not putting lime in that delish XX beer? The amber's pretty good too. I bet the bottle opener works on the amber bottles too!

I dunno. For years the only knife I carried was a Buck 303. I reckon I might change that to a Buck 301. Either way. It'd likely be good enough.

for a folder, I would My tried and true buck 110. For a fixed blade, it would have to be my trusty Becker bk11.

This may be weird commin from someone like me that is attached to their trapper but i would choose my buck 112. I would want something with a lock and that is VERY strong and the 112 fits that. but the close second would be the big yella trapper of course.
