Only Powernoodle could cut himself with a closed Umnumzaan

So I took my Umnumzaan to my sons' Christmas cantata tonight. While sitting there in the church pew, I crammed my hand into my pocket and felt that familiar sensation of sharp steel slicing my finger. At first I thought, "dang, the corner of that Umnumzaan scale sure is sharp." But after seeing blood on my pinkie, I figured out that I had crammed enough Powernoodle pinkie flesh between the scales to drag it over the tip of the unopened blade. I had about a 0.25" slice on my finger.

I cast no aspersions on CRK for this. But it would be nice if the Umnumzaan was idiot proof. Maybe on the Umnumzaan II, Powernoodle Edition, extend the scales just a millimeter or two so that stupid people like me can't cut themselves on a closed blade. I have a reputation at the Powernoodle Compound for cutting myself regularly with my knives, but this was the first time I did it with a closed blade. :)

Maybe you've seen this pic before, but its the only one I have of my Umnumzaan.

Been there done that. So, you aren't as dumb as you think you are but as dumb as you look.

Part of the fun of owning a knife is cutting yourself:D, it creates bond with the knife, kind of like being kissed. Nice Zaan you have there brother.

I'm perfectly ok with cutting myself, and have had to get stitches twice in the last 2 years, but I prefer that the blade be deployed when I do it.

Just some proof that I'm qualified to speak on the subject. This one was courtesy of a CQC-7.

I take a bite as a sign of affection, I think your Zaan really likes you when it's biting you from a closed position, that one is definitely a keeper. Funny when I go to a knife show and one of the blades bites me, I buy it cuz I know that one is special. My wife thinks I'm crazy.

Rest easy knowing it was a quality cut:D

I've done that with a Seb before, but I blame my fat fingers.

Dam, I thought you were just talking about a small bite. Looks like your CQC-7 was trying to wake you up, handling knives is like riding a motorcycle, you don't handle one unless you are completely and absolutely there. Feel better bro.

i've been stitched quite a few times courtesy of my own stupidity.

i'm just glad you didn't shoot yourself ..

Ive heard quite a few people get a little nip with a closed crk. I must have skinny fingers because I just tried this on a zaan, 3 sebs and a mnandi.

I pushed as hard as I could but nothing.

I looked close and it looked like I had atleast a few sheets of paper between my finger fat and the edge.

Someone reported the same thing recently with one of the Southards. I have read one or two similar reports with Sebenzas over the years, I think. I think it's the result of a favorable overall blade-to-handle ratio, not just lengthwise but also depthwise.

Send it to me. I bet I can do it too as I have done the same thing with a Sebenza. There is a price to pay for open backed knives.

2-3 of these wrapped tightly around your folder ought to fix that problem!

He cut himself with the blade unopened. It didn't open in his pocket :)

The rubber bands will cushion & insulate the knife!

Ought to keep flesh from touching steel until ready to use. -I figure it'd only add 10-20 seconds to deployment! ;)

This was a freaky occurrence which I probably would have a hard time replicating. And Dinokay, that pic of my hand getting stitches was last year with a CQC-7. Yesterday's Umnumzaan cut was just a little slice.

MAN, I hate when that happens!!! had a similar thing happen to me as well, blade being almost to the end of the handle, finger slipped in and was slit open, pretty deep, with a surprised look on my face and then just a bit of anger too as now the tip of that finger I knew would be tender for a long time to come, just like Indiana Jones and snakes...why did it have to be the very TIP of my finger ;)

Sounds like it's time to make a nice fancy back spacer there!

Happened to me too with my beloved zaan. I don't agree with extending the scales because the blade to handle ratio on zaan is one of the things that make it so aesthetically pleasing to me. I'd rather carry band aids in my wallet.
