Only Two Folders You'll Ever Need, Both Around $30 Each

I went though a folder stage and bought a good many. But the two that I ended up using the most were both mid-range if not cheap in price (both right around $30 each). The first is a smaller knife that is extremely light and can handle most daily tasks and the second is a larger knife that can tackle tougher jobs.

The Sog is assisted opening and if you watch Nutnfancy's video's from youtube, he claims it's the knife he edc's the most. It's just a great little knife with solid quality to it. It's just big enough to do most any task the average person would ever need a knife for, even for people like us.

The Spyderco Tenacious is a knife that would cost $20-$30 more at least, but they had their blades made in China (normally all are made in the USA). I personally can't tell the difference and my blade looks the same as the day I got it and I haven't had to sharpen it once. I forgot what it's called, but it's the equivalent to a good steel, maybe VG-10. Now if you want made in America steel, I would recommend the Delica 4 from the same company or many others which are just above the $50 range. There are many options when the prices go up, this is just the best I found for right at $30 each (what I paid and still looks about the same).

This is just from my experience, maybe help some guys save a few hundred dollars and try out first what ended up working for me. Feel free to chime in and give your experiences with EDC knives I'd say at least under $50 for a knife thread that pretty much anyone can afford. :)

VG-10 isn't an American steel. IIRC majority of spydercos are made over seas. Not that anything is wrong with that.

I dont like my sog flash 1 at all.. Blade play in every direction, too small handle, pocketclip is way too thin and will bend when it snag into something(mine did twice), it rattles, lockup doesnt seem solid at all, blade steel is ok for the price though.

The tenacious is great :)

And here I was thinking Swiss Army & Buck. The Flash has a great blade shape, though; thin, flat grind, drop point.

I think there are several inexpensive knives that will get the job done.

I send people that want to get started in the knife world towards the Tenacious and some of the Buck models, especially the Buck Vantage Pro. Thats S30V steel with G10 handles for around $50. Lets not forget about the Buck 110. Of course, Victorinox models offer a lot of bang for the buck with most casual knife users (for those that don't mind slipjoints).

For some - thats where they stop. For others - my higher end folders excite them, and they start paying more attention to blade steel and materials.

I could probably get thru the day quite easily with my Tenacious - but what fun is that? Stop at one or two knives???? Can't do it.:D

Be careful with the lock on the SOG. I had the large version of the flash and the handles spread apart allowing the lock to move to the unlocking position. This happend to me while cutting some black fabric used for landscaping that I ran into while diging a hole.

Kershaw, Buck, Gerber, Boker, all have great blades for this price point. I got a Kershaw OD-1 at walmart on sale for 30 bucks and it has not left my pocket since, it has everything I need in a utility EDC, Good easily sharpened steel, steel framelock w/ hinderer lockstop, G-10, and a cool flipper. Oh and the pocket clip is my favorite in production, its the Zero Tolerance clip

yea, I'm sure I'm wrong on many points. Like someone else said they have been what's worked for me. And I have around 30 pocket knives under the $60 range.

Not sure about the steel Crimson, I heard on a review it was the equivalent, they were probably wrong. My blade has been through some moderate abuse and it's still shaving hairs after months. Maybe it's better than VG-10? I can't tell the difference in use or in re-sharpening. (OK, the Spyderco forums say it's basically equal to Aus-8, definitely better than Aus-6).

Edit: checked the Sog - zero blade play and the lock is tight (tried to push it closed), and it's had more usage than the Tenacious.

+1  love my vantage pro, can't say enough good things about it!

That is my opinion too, when done right, AUS8 is a damn good EDC performer. And that is exactly why I still group the Ontario RAT 1 folder into this class. For $30 or less, it's a hell of a decent knife and is plenty good enough for even a knife enthusiast to carry. If it had G10 instead of that "G10 look" Zytel type material it would be a serious contender in the <$50 knife category. I think it already is. The fact is though, the scale materail it uses is good enough anyway.

IMO, AUS8 blows 8cr13 out of the water

There was no mention by the thread starter of him saying VG-10 was An American steel. He simply stated if you want something in American steel try "what ever he said". So what he said, just after mentioning his VG-10 knife, "but if you want someting in American steel you may want to check "------" this out. This was said { after his thoughts on his knife made with VG-10 }. So he steered us away from VG-10 to an american made steel. I am right!!

But your correcting him in where spydies are made was bang on. Some but not all of their high end stuff is made in the U.S. But there are many countries "Japan in perticular" that make some of the best quality knives that Spyderco offers. Many of these countries expecially Japan way outshine the quality of American made, mass produced knives (my opinion only). Buck is coming back around but they have still not earned my trust back. Back in the days when I was young, "a good while ago" when you had a buck knife you had a real deal quality knife. But there was not this crazy knife craze/fad going on back then so their competion was not very quantified, if that is a correct term.

Cheers,

Daniel

wow, I didn't know the Rat folder was that cheap. I'm gonna have to get one of those. Thanks for bringing that up, if someone already didn't.

And I'm not saying I found the best folders, I'm sure there are better ones I haven't tried like this Rat folder (I never looked at because I figured it would be $80). I do like the classic Bucks, haven't tried that new one but it looks pretty cool. I've got a leek which I used for a while, probably like the blur a bit better because of the tip. Lot of stuff out there. Just wanted to start up the discussion. I've already got one more on my list of ones I can afford to try out :) Thanks!

What steel is the Delica 4 made of? VG10, that good ol' "made in America steel". ;)

Your title is kinda presumptuous "Only two folders you'll ever need" wow with over a 100,000 users you've showed up to and in one fell swoop figured out the only two folders everyone one of us NEED. You Sir are a Genius pure d genius I tell you. Hell and you only registered in October of this year, damn, your good. Yes kinda is the under statement of the year. Thanks for showing up and straightening all this out for us, and just in time for Christmas and the New Year, wow this just keeps getting better.

Wow, you are grumpy for some reason.

He made a claim because he likes these two folders a lot. Let him appreciate what he has and have fun without pissing in his cereal. Geez some of you guys take this Internet stuff WAY too seriously.

I am not familiar of what a RAT 1 folder is. I will have to check it out. But I am with you on the AUS-8. I have had some very very good performers. Give it to the Boss and it will be as good as "it" can get.
