i also am wondering how 154 can handle some abuse, I've only had experience with it in folding knives
I think it can handle any task a knife is intended to be used for. There are probably other steels that can withstand the stresses of battoning better, but personnally, I don't see the need for battoning with a knife, but that is another topic.

Realistically, with a 5" blade, how much abuse could you put it through? Baton a log of 2-3" diameter? I mean it's not like an 8" blade that might be used to baton thicker pieces of wood, chop etc...

I agree 100%, but some people get ideas after a few slugs or a dozen beers and get “creative” with their knives, rocks, and other metallic tools. I own a 9” blade in 440c that I would not baton with ever. It wasn’t imo made for that. 5160 or even 1095 will baton or take abuse all day.

i have used my cold steel recon scout to pull boards off a pallet, somewhat like a makeshift crowbar and it held up wonderfully

I bought a cheap recon tanto for similar purposes and it doesn’t have a chip on it! But I’ve used 9” blades by Ontario and Condor in 1075 or 5160 for bathroom tile removal, wood door replacement, etc, with just a few dents and rolls that a sharpening took care of quick.

it is 154 cm my dude

They make recon scout in 154cm? Apologies for my ignorance, I don’t have many cold steel knives so I haven’t done much research on them. But I know from experience that even s35vn (thick enough)will take some abuse. Not as much as 154, but abuse nonetheless.

I was drawing a comparison between the two steels, that is 440c and 154cm. The last one is actually closer to ats-34, but in carbon and chromium content same as 440c. I think molybdenum content in 154cm makes it a different steel. The blackbird isn’t thick enough a blade to pry with, IMO.
I had someone on ignore so I thought you were talking to me. Sorry.

i appreciate your feedback no worries

The Ontario Tak mod, if it were still available, is a thicker blade in 154cm. But I don’t know what secondary market prices are like. It’s a different style blade, and a half inch shorter, but it stabs and pries with confidence.

I love my Tak Mod and it was only $80 from KnifeCenter at the time of its availability.. I actually bought two of them cause they were so cheap, almost disposable.

I have 2 as well. One is numbered, the other isn’t. It’s a great user, I keep one in kydex piggybacked to an rd9. The first I bought from rattlesnakebushcraft with kydex and the other from knifecenter. For the price a better blade than the blackbird or almost any other similarly sized blade. Oh, and great pic btw.
I had a leather sheath for it but I was putting it back in the sheath too forcefully I guess and it went right through the 8oz. leather welt.

I passed on the Black Bird when I had the money because of its thickness to handle size ratio. If I had the money I would of gotten the Tak Mod when they were available...

You missed out on a great blade, but I believe I remember you got the Cerberus, which has a similar function/length and thickness, as well as blade style. I always carry one or the other, so you really didn’t lose out that much! I agree about the thickness of the blackbird being an issue. For a pro it might be great, but for someone as accident prone as I am it really doesn’t cut it when I’m miles from anywhere.

For a truly indestructible blade look on the exchange forum for a used busse or kin in sr-77(sr-7) or infi. I say used, because those blades are expensive. I bought a damaged (edge only) 10” blade in sr77 with high quality kydex sheath for $200. The previous owner was chopping wheels with it, and I fixed the edge in about 2 hours. It cost as much as 2 Ontario’s, but I know I’ll never need to use the lifetime warranty, because it can’t be broke.
There’s one on the exchange right, now, the scrapyard son of dogfather and it’s right about the size you’re looking for(actually about 7” of edge) It’s sr-77, and it will pry until you’re shoulder gives out, I promise. For $200, though it might sound like a lot, it will outlast $1000 of other knives.

I bought a Tak Mod, I think off of Knifecenter, because of the price they were offering at the time. If you look over the reviews you'll see a lot complaints about the weight of the knife- it's extremely handle heavy, and the blocky handles don't help any. It's a serious chunk of metal, but.... I also got one of their limited edition bushscraft machetes from some on-line retailer, and on that one the handles seem way too thin for the size of the blade. Again- it's well constructed, but.... You'll probably want to try one on for size before buying because of these issues. And I'm not bashing Ontario, just saying. I have one of their 12" Blackie Collins machetes with a D-guard that could probably chop it's way through just about anything.
