Ontario... Friend or Foe?

I still get tons of use out of my RTAK II as well as my Ontario 22" machete. Between those 2 jokers, I don't carry an axe to the campsite anymore.

There's also an inch of wasted space between the handle and the blade that serves absolutely no purpose. It doesn't work as a choil and just eliminates any extra control of the point you get from using a small blade.

From what I've seen, that little area is a safety feature, It's left unsharpened in case you close the blade with your thumb still depressing the liner lock. Of course, if you still don't like the RAT1, I'll gladly take it off your hands. :D

Awright folks! Enough is enough!!!

sheesh!

What I really want to know, dead serious, is .................

who's better! Stanley framing hammer or Craftsman framing hammer?

there's got to be a better! :p

ESEE is better....

Oh it's still a completely useable tool and a fine knife, so overall I'm not griping. It's just something they can improve on. If they turned it into a choil it would make alot more sense-still protect you fingers from accidental closure and still allow you to comfortably choke up on the blade.

me too, still looking everywhere for an original RTAK...

I like the Junglas better.

That's a great comparison shot, although I think I still like the RTAK, not quite sure how that recessed handle on the Junglas effects the ergonomics/balance/feel of the blade. Anybody happen to have a Livesay Rapid Deployment to compare them with?

While Ontario makes a good product,I would'nt put them in the same class as ESEE.It's hard to beat Rowens take on 1095.

I like your sube :) auto or stick?

Sticky :D. Had planned on getting an STi, but couldn't afford the insurance and I couldn't find one in that color. The 2.5i isn't anything to laugh at and handles these mountain roads like a dream. More knives this way too.

Speaking of... I have handled the RTAK II, and I can say without a doubt that I much prefer the original. And I could be wrong (and it happens more frequently that I'd like to admit), but just from looking at the Junglas, I think I still prefer my old RTAK. Again, I haven't had the pleasure of handling the Junglas, so I may be very wrong, and I'll be the first to admit my wrongness and buy one if I do handle one and like it better than the RTAK.

That RTAK has served my very well over the years though. It's chopped plenty and I've never had trouble with the edge. The sheath is terrible though and is the only thing I'd change about the package (the pouch is barely big enough to hold some dog bone style sharpeners). I think the sheath looks more like a boat oar and would probably work in a pinch as a bushcraft ping pong paddle if you couldn't find suitable wood to carve your own.

IMO before RAT Cutlery/ESEE came along, Ontario was THE place to shop if you were into bang-for-buck. I've owned several of their Spec-Plus knives, machetes, and the original RAT series. My RAT-7 looks like a complete POS now, not because it was a bad knife, but because it was so good -- I used that b*tich for everything. Only complaint was that there was no real distal taper, so the tip was obtuse...

But now that ESEE is around? Even if the knives were the same quality, it'd be worth the price increase for the sheaths alone.

who's better! Stanley framing hammer or Craftsman framing hammer?

C'mon, that's just stupid.
Everyone who's anyone uses and Estwing! !

An STi is usually over kill for most people, :) so no worries, the 2.5 is plenty car for commuting and zippy driving ;P

I've never played with a Tak before, so Junglas will be my buddy, along while I save and wait for Busse :) part of the reason I lag on gear is because I build and turn around cars and bikes alot on the side, so I'm always strapped ;P Hahahaha. Its all good though, I think I will pleasantly be pleased and happy with the Jungie :)

Nothing good or bad about Ontario... the Original was the Livesay RTAK as seen in my pic... then the 1st Ontario offering ,I have seen off & on from $50-100 same with RTAKII. the 1st offering from Ontario I did not really care for , I liked the RTAKII but I had to reshape my Scales to fit my hands...but sheath on both were so so... now that ESEE has taking lessons learned from RTAK's of the past & let us as the consumer voice our opinions and the Junglas was Created and is the BEST of all RTAK's to date,Knife & Sheath wise... Great Job !

Be nice guys. Ontario produces a good product, as do a lot of other knife manufacturers. I have used their knives many, many times in remote areas and never had a problem personally.

I used a RAT7(1095) for years w/o an issue, Hiked all over Colorado Springs with it one summer and never even hinted at having issues , I kept it wicked sharp and worked it over pretty good for years... Only reason I sold it was to fund RC blades now ESEE knives
