I just got an Ontario Hell's Belle and noticed that the last 1" of the blade bends to the left slightly (looking down from the top of the blade). Does anybody know if that is normal, or is it a heat treat or grind problem. The way its done, it almost looks intentional.

Thanks,

David

Unless there is something I haven't heard about, which is very possible, it shouldn't bend. It should be straight. Return it it if you can.

David,

Is it just the last inch that bends or does the whole blade angle slightly to the left? If it is the latter, you have a right handed knife. I don't think Ontario does this intentionally, but it sometimes happens, and my carry pieces are like this.

Its just the last inch or so that curves slightly to the left. As far as I can tell, the rest of the blade is straight. Thanks for your help.

In knife afficianado circles, we call a blade like that warped.

I was reading a thread over on the Mad Dog forum (don't ask why) and the Mad Dog himself said that he met Bagwell at a Blade show and Bagwell sat on the tip of his Bowie and bent it. Then Bagwell showd how you can just bend the tip back to true. It sounds liek this story fits with your predicament! Sorry to hear about your bent tip. I'd send it back, and inquire about the tip strength. If all of the bowies are made liek that, i'd suggest geting a different one.

Thanks for the suggestions. I thought about just bending it true, but figured I would talk to Ontario first and see what they say about it.

Is this normal for these knives? Does anyone out there have any other stories or has there been any testing done? I was thinking of getting one of the fortress style Hells Bells, but now I have second thoughts. I've seen the articals in various mags but I would like to hear from people not getting paid for their thoughts.
When Mr. Bagwell "sat on his blade" (kinda makes you think he fell on his sword) was it to show tip strength? Or was it a mistake?
Good luck with your knife.

I think that the Ontario Hell's Belles are plenty tough for the type of knife that they are supposed to be. They are strictly a fighting knife.

I rehandled my Ontario Gambler bowie and during the process of the work, I grabbed a hot spot on the tang which caused me to let go of it REAL quick. It dropped about 5 foot to my shop floor, point first onto the concrete. It divoted the floor and did nothing to the blade. It is not a bad piece of steel.

They are very thin at the tip...designed to be a fighting Bowie.

James: LOL!

I don't know whether the sitting on the tip was on purpose or not!! If you want to read the thread, it is over on www.tacticalforums.com

Go to the Mad Dog knvies forum. It should be on one of the recent threads.

I bet your knfie, and the sat on knife (if that really happenned) were rejects. Fighting knives, though meant to be flexible to a certain degree, shouldn't bend like that! Fishters should be resiliant to shok, not bend like wet noodles.
