Ontario Knives RAT-3 and RAT-5

I do see a TAK-1 in D2. http://www.knifeworks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=6319
But that's a TAK-1, not a RAT-5. They are different designs. I personally prefer the RAT blade design. Also, I don' t understand the statement that the TAK-1 has a better grip. It is linen micarta and the RAT's are canvas micarta. While I admit I don't have a TAK to compare, logic says that canvas micarta should be rougher to the touch than linen micarta.

I'm familiar with how the RATS cut, feel, and sharpen. IMO, it would just be nice to be able to have a D2 RAT in the 2 available sizes. I'm sure many people would buy all three for use and some would even buy them just to have a full collection of the line.

Bladeprince,
I noticed when handling them that the TAK1 handle had more texture, yet the RAT knives (all of them) were much smoother... I even imagined they'd be slippery when bloody or damp (well any knife would I suppose). The lady there said the "weave" on the TAK1 linen handle was just more "open" than the canvas micarta on the RATs, giving the TAK a coarser grip. In any event, the difference is substantial.

Interesting. Thanks for the input.

As a side note, I just stuck my RAT-3 under the faucet and it still has the same grip as when dry. I assume your TAK would be the same.

I also forgot to mention that as far as a medium lenght D2 in the RAT/TAK lineup, the D2 TAK just can't fill that space between the 3 and 7 because it's blade length is only 4.25". That's only 1/2" longer than the RAT-3. The RAT-5 is has a 5" blade which is a better transition between the RAT-3 and RAT-7.

Don't misunderstand. I like the TAK-1. It's a great knife. It just can't take the place of a RAT-5 in D2 because of it's dimensions.
