Ontario or Cold Steel?

Cold Steel out of Ventura California? Garbage.

I have only two Cold Steel knives, so I can't speak for their entire line. I have a Master Hunter and SRK in CarbonV. :):)

Both of these knives are very high quality, and have served me well for many years. IMHO, CS Carbon V blades are the top of the cheap knife line.

To refer to the entire Cold Steel line as garbage is very misleading and disingenuous. If you don't like the owner, that's fine. But that doesn't make his products garbage.

Was not posted to upset you, would you have been so angry/mad if I said "CS Carbon V blades are the top of the cheap knife line."? cuz that is what you said. "cheap" Being the operative word here. Am I still misleading and disingenuous? Cheap=Garbage, in my book. Inexpensive perhaps, may have been a better word choice had you really wanted to make a point.

But alas, we are now splitting hairs. Not my Intent. If I may,let me rephrase my comments in saying this,The Owner of Cold Steel is a friggen whack job and his blades are Cheap. Feeling any better now? Or are you feeling like I did after buying one of his CHEAP blades, using it and having it FAIL me? The Handle came off the tang while slicing thru shoulder high mustard weed in Trabuco Canyon,Orange County Calif in 2004 after a fatality involving a mountain biker and a Large Mountain Lion. I was in a party of probably 12 others looking for evidence behind a DFG tracker. I was not armed but with this panga style blade. In the scope of my firefighting duties that day I was not packing my duty firearm. I was feeling pretty naked out there. misleading and disengenuous? nope, not hardly. That cold steel blade was GARBAGE.

There are a lot of good Cold Steel blades out there. Just because you tried one style of CS's knives and it didn't do what you wanted doesn't mean you knock the whole line up. I have a few CS blades I would pit against almost anything out there. Your lack of experience with their better products makes your opinion null and void. The ethics of Cold Steel is the worst part of that company.

Just one mans opinion. Go ahead and question my credos. I read/perused earlier one of your posts regarding a vehicle fire where your firefighters were all standing over the smoldering remains of the car. Not one of them was wearing proper PPE per NFPA standards nor were they wearing SCBA's.Your arguments against the use of Aqueous Foam on a vehicle fire also screamed inexperienced vollie to me.Did I post anything? Nope Lets chat credibility. You flamed me somewhere else on this forum but I just let it go(it was about fixed blades for firefighters). You have some 2600 posts to my 30.You have been around here a lot longer then I. Doubt you can bully me much. ;) Anyways, Thanks for Volunteering to dance where devil plays and doing what others fear.Be Safe, have a good day.

As you will notice I deleated the last comment before you posted this as i figured it was inappropriate to judge you until I know you better. I don't understand how you dog fixed blades for emergency personnel but auto's are OK. Also the pics were taken after the fire was extinguished and what you see in the photo is steam. My guys were wearing NFPA approved PPE and they also initially were fighting while wearing Scott's carbon Fiber 30 min High Pressure SCBA's. As far as using foam we were called as mutual aid to a neighboring fire dept. It was there call not to use foam and we followed there incident commands wishes as there was no inherent danger to us at the time. I dont want to bully anyone and I hope you stay around forums and enjoy this great place Spark let's us use. Like I said post was edited after a few minutes of thinking about what i wrote and I will admit it was a little out of line at this point in time so I removed it. I still stand by my thoughts on CS and on fixed blades though.:p :D

Hey guys, I really appreciate you two (semi) resolving this arugement before it got bad. Now lets cool down a bit.

Thanks for all of the help guys! I have decided to go with an Ontario, but the one that I like, the 18" military issue machete, is no longer on their site. Have they stoped making them?

you can buy them at Knifecenter.com, although they cost a couple bucks more, you can get a good, fast shipping and a wider selection that's mostly in stock.

P. S. get the NEW MODELS with MOLDED HANDEL, you won't have to worry about the handle coming loose or water getting under the handle.

I didn't know they had changed the handle. The one I have has riveted plastic scales almost like the Becker knives. It has performed very well even though it was submersed in water for two weeks straight. Make sure you are getting the right model.

:) You oughta drop by a Firehouse some day, :D this aint nothing. Buncha rabid alpha dogs taking jabs ALL day long.... kinda funny actually. Such is the life and times of the Brotherhood of Firefighters.

Yup we are a weird and interesting lot. Never the less it I initiated it with my slight flying off the handle. I would have to say some of my closet friends are Firefighters. Its hard to get much closer to someone when they hold your life in their hands just as you hold theirs. Good to see fellow brethren here.

Now don't think for a second that I don't know what a real arugement is. I just moved out of a place where I lived with 11 other people in a 3 bedroom house, and I like it quiet, so you can imagine... also going to IPS kinda numbs you a little bit what with all of the gang activity. No no no, I just wanted to do as I thought my Father in heaven would do.:D

Right on John79! 11 people in a 3bdr? YIKES! You must have the patience of Job.
What or where is IPS? Glad you went with Ontario Knives,I dont own one but have never heard anything bad about them.If they are sweet, let us know. look forward to your Eval.

IPS is Indiana's Inner-city public schools, they are among the worst in the state as far as gang violence and funding goes.... wow I hope you guys weren't hoping for something more exciting.

I thought maybe it was Indiana Prison System on my first guess. Thanks for the info I will remember that.

I also want to add the 12" model has a real nice feel and balance to it. It's very good for close work and it doesn't seem to strain the wrist.

Either are fine.

It should be kept in mind that machetes are inherently kinda crappy knives, intended to be beaten, and things like handles are likely to break. I've had this happen on an Ontario. I've also had a Tramontina handle crack. Wired it together before it came off. Heat treatments are usually well on the soft side, which is a good thing considering the kind of treatment machetes usually get. And few machetes come with a ready-to-go edge. The most serious criticism of Ontario machetes I have (and have also heard of from others) is that they are sometimes run too hard and brittle.
