Howdy folks-

I got to play with a new toy this week! It's actually the first Ranger that I've gotten to really use, and I was durn impressed. I did a 'full' writeup though and thought you guys might enjoy checking it out! Link and teaser pic:

Good write up spooky. What are you're impressions relative to the BK-2 (I thought you handled it during Cmdr's passaround) ? Also maybe convexing that edge would work well....I found knocking of the sides of the v-bevels helped the cutting performance considerably on my RC knives. In fact I just finished convexing my 2-d old izula.

Anyhow - I thought your review was very thoughtful. Almost surprised by it given your penchant for scandi's bushcrafters!

Edit - is it just me or does the Afghan breed look a little like the Christian savior :D

(Don't worky folks I'm a catholic so I'm not picking on me....)

Thanks much! It's a tough call between that and the BK2. They both have A LOT of heft, very wide blades, and thick handles. I can't say why for sure, but I seem to feel like I have more control for fine tasks with the Afghan though. The BK2 feels better for light chopping/whacking. Both would serve as excellent camp knives.

As far as versus a scandi belt knife, they're just in different classes. For general woods carry and bushcraft tasks, nothing beats a small fixed blade like the BHK or Brian Andrews, etc. But for those hunting for that general purpose camp knife, or who just like this much heft, I think it's a solid buy.

gotta love those Rangers... got my first one in winter of '04/'05... seems like just the other day -- the RD6 is still one of my most often-used blades, even though it has lost its coating and the blade may be a hair thinner from lots of honing, it's still in the mere dawn of its useful life...
