Hey folks. I have one of these coming in tomorrow. These knives are a result of Justin of Ranger Knives collaborating with Ontario, I think. The Ontario website is so sparse it doesn't make any mention, I could find, of these knives.

This knife has a 4.5" X .025" blade of 5160 steel, with the infamous black coating, along with black micarta handles with an exposed pommel. It rides in a black nylon sheath with insert, and accessory pocket.

I was considering this knife or the Kabar Becker Campanion. The Becker was an inch longer and had the grivory grips. I decided to go with the Ranger because of the micarta grips, the shorter length, and the clip point style blade, which I like a lot! It will be a bigger version of my Entrek Cobra.

So my question is , does anyone have an Ontario Ranger and your thoughts on the 5160 steel used, along with ideas on the clip point vs. the drop point found on the Becker?

It may be that these are so new that there are only a few out there in the hands of knifeknuts who frequent thes boards!:D Still, if anyone has and knowledge........

Looks like I may be one of the first with an Ontario Ranger. I was told on another forum that the Ranger Forum and Justin have some folks trying these out along side Justin's line and that they seem to be holding their own.

I got my RD-4 yesterday, and have to say that this thing is a TANK! At the thickest part of the blade tang, it mics out at .265", and remember, this is a 4.5" blade. Although thick in the spine, it is flat ground with excellent blade grinds, and a very well defined tip on the clip point blade. There is a usuable and nicely done choil , and on the top a little area of groove's for a thumb rest. If I had any complaints it would be the boxy feeling micarta grips, but I removed them and with a little sanding they feel much better. The blade extends through the handles for a 1/2" with a slot cut through for a lanyard, and the very end is grooved like the thumb rest. Comes in nylon sheath with hard plastic insert, a nicely done pocket on the front, and is set up for molle carry. All in all a nice knife that is built like a brick sh!thouse.:eek::D

the size of the handle is what keep me off of the ranger's knives, the handle look very big, maybe a little too generously sized.
