Please give your view/preference on the follow two folders.

If you have any recommendation on other folders at a similar price range, please state.

Also, if possible please comment on the steel.

Ontario RAT-1 Satin (Blade Material AUS-8 Stainless Steel)

Spyderco Tenacious (Blade Material 8Cr13MoV Stainless Steel)

Cheers.

Both have great reports from owners, it will come down to your preference. Just buy them both. :) I'll buy the Tenacious one of these days but I do love the RAT1. They are very tough and sharp. I like the blade length of the RAT1 too. The Satin version have very sharp spine edges and will throw sparks of firesteel easily,

All the best!

i have both. with the rat 1 you get more bang for your buck. it's a lot of knife and has good fit and finish.

^ what he said...

I wasn't really impressed with either - I've owned both and have sold both. For around the same price, you should also look into the Kershaw Skyline and the Buck Vantage series.

Nothing against the Rat, but I dig the Tenacious and its siblings. Nice steel, opens like butter, superior slicer, G10.

Don't own a RAT. So I say get the Tenacious. It really is an awesome knife for the money. Don't let the made in China stop you.

The general consensus seems that the rat-1 is a hefty knife that holds up well especially for a folder, while the spyderco is obviously a bit lighter and shaped differently. Seems like a personal preference call. IMO i'd get the rat-1 though.

I have both, couldn't find the rat in satin finished so I stripped the paint off (if you run into the same problem check out my thread about stripping it)

I like the rat 1, it's nice, the blade comes perfectly centered... but, it's stiff and if you loosen it you loose the centeredness... even with it loosened the tenacious is easier for me to open, I'm a huge span of the spyderhole and I can spydiedrop it a lot easier to get it open than I can open the rat.

Even though the rat is a newer toy for me... the tenacious is in my pocket right now. The rat 1 does feel great in hand but it's not as easily accessible as the tenacious. Also... if you're going to be using it for edc, the rat 1 will get a lot more comments on its size despite the blade length being hardly any different. It looks like a bigger knife than the tenacious does. So it's less people friendly, harder to open... but it does feel awesome in the hand and really sturdy

For me, the Rat 1 feels better in hand than the Tenacious. I like the heft and the handle is rounded so you dont have your hand getting abraded when it's in the pocket with the knife. at knifeworks, there are some cool color combinations now, orange, desert, black, and green scales, and blades in black and satin.

Another vote for the RAT-1 here!
I owned both, and only kept the RAT. Don't get me wrong, I love Spyderco and have a Para clipped to my pocket as I type, but I really believe the RAT is just much much better than the Tenacious. A lot of people say that the steel is the same on both blades, but owning both, I can tell you that the RAT took a much better edge for me, and held it a lot longer.
Now, If you really like Spyderco, I really recommend saving your pennies for an FFG Endura or Delica. These are proven to be the best at their price range, with much superior blade material.
