I'll get down to the point (No pun intended). I want a Rat 1 and have for months. I'm finally about to pull the trigger but just saw some reviews saying it develops blade play rather quickly and some videos showing the lock bending or snapping under medium usage.

This question is to the owners of the Rat-1 that have actually used it.

Does this knife hold up over time and in what ways?

I have heard nothing but good things about them (except the price, only heard they are way too good to be so cheap). You shouldn't have a single issue.

This,

It is a very highly recommended knife for the price tag. Do a quick search here on BF and you will see tons of positive talk about this baby.

Thanks, guys. I have done hours upon hours of watching reviews, researching the materials, etc. I will own one no matter what, even if just to fondle but my question is.

Does this knife hold up over time and use? I know the finish on the blade is just crappy paint and will chip and scratch and i'm fine with that. It makes it look like you used your knife, like you're supposed to.

who ever said it develops blade play probably doesn't own any tools to tighten the pivot screw....I've had my Rat 1 for a year and it flicks open almost like an assisted knife if you keep it oiled good.

I've used it for a work knife and it's never failed me.

I had my first RAT I for about two years and it worked perfectly. Blade was centered, opened and closed easily, and never had any play horizontally or vertically. I lost it a few months ago and ordered another one. So far, it has been as good as the first one.

My Rat 1 when it was brand new.

What it looks like right now.....I carried it the whole summer of 2013 and beat on it tough with no failures. Tomorrow I'm gonna take it apart and clean all the dirt out and sharpen it up real good.

Great. Thanks a lot, everybody. Great pictures, Tac.

The only question now.... Black handles with Satin or Black Blade.... or Pink handles and Black blade? Ohhhh decisions decisions

Ohhh, I'm thinkin' it, Tac. I love myself a black blade but the paint is crap.... but the wear looks cool... but I'll have to strip it after a certain point anyway... but it looks so damn cool.... argh

It's only like 30 bucks or so. I don't know why you just wouldn't spring for it? keepem sharp

PS if you don't like it you aren't a ton of dough

I'm still mad at myself that I didn't buy the Rat 1 with the black handle instead of the OD green.

I just think that the satin blade with black handle looks real good on these Rat 1s.

I like the RAT II better but own a RAT I as well just because these are some very finely finished knives for the price.

There is one huge problem with my Rat 1- it makes me feel stupid for buying other more expensive folders! :p

It's a great folder and does everything I expect a folder to do.

FYI, all our financial situations are different. A $30 knife may be nothing to you and me but quite a bit to someone else. The more you can respect that the better off you'll be.

The RAT 1 is...hmm, I've given it so much praise I'm running out of ways to say it! It's just an incredibly solid & well built knife at a budget knife price. My oldest RAT 1 is a little over 2yrs old. I EDC'd it for about a year and it saw anywhere from light to pretty heavy usage. It took everything I threw at it without any issues. 2+yrs later and no blade play in any direction. The lock up has moved over a fraction of an inch but it's still solid as ever. After about a year of carrying it I slowly began to notice it was very difficult to flick it open. Anyone who owns one knows how incredibly easy they are to flick open when they're new. I spent about 10min disassembling it, wiping it down, a few drops of oil, reassembling it...back to brand-spanking-new flicking action.

To put it simply, I would be very surprised if you don't end up creating a meaningful relationship with this knife.

Mine came with a small amount of vertical play. It doesn't really bother me nor does it preclude me from using it since I purchased it as a beater anyway.

I have had the rat 1 for over a year and it gets a lot of use. I also like the rat 2 as a smaller backup blade. Both great knives at a low price!!! No blade play ever.
