I recently received a RAT 2. I am unable to either open or close this knife one handed! My thumb doesn't get enough purchase on the blade lock and the blade sticks closed. Is this common or should I return the knife?

Welcome to Bladeforums!

Tech Support is for website technical questions. I moved this to a better forum for advice on what to do with a problem knife.

Welcome to Bladeforums.

I have a Rat 1, but no Rat 2. But you should definitely be able to open it with one hand. Is your technique good, i.e., can you open other thumb stud knives with one hand? If so, then the pivot may be too tight. If you are up to it, you can loosen the pivot with the correct size torx bit, to that magical spot where the blade opens smoothly but there is little or no blade play when the knife is open. Use the correct flavor of Loc-tite to keep the pivot screw from moving around. But you should definitely be able to open it with one hand, with no prob.

If you are having trubba both opening and closing the knife, it sounds like the pivot screw is just cranked down too tight. So you can either adjust it yourself, or sent it back. Good luck.

"The blade sticks closed."

That's called a detent. The whole purpose is that it does keep the blade from opening. (So that it doesn't open when you don't want it to.) Have you ever used a single-blade modern pocket knife before? (Not being snarky, honest question.) Because that's how they all are.

As for closing it, get tougher thumbs. :p Seriously.

And wouldn't this be better in General instead of Feedback?
