I found a really good deal on an Ontario Rat 3 near me, but it has a "2" on the handle, which I've never heard of. Granted, I don't know much about them, but I've always wanted to try one out. Anyone have any information on this?

I believe that indicates that the knife is a factory second.

which means it did not meet factory standards, it has some kind of defect. i dont know what the 2 means but thats what a factory second is.

Most of the time a factory 2nd is only cosmetic defect, not affecting performance. There might be a factory blemish in the coating or the grind might be slightly off. Ask Ask many questions. If however it says the heat treatment is off, then I would stay away from it. A knife can be great looking but be worthless if the heat treat is off. Where did you find these? Internet or local store?

Found them on Craigslist. Each of them are $30, but the Spyderco is sold, so I was only interested in the Rat. He said it's just a cosmetic issue, but I think I'll save my money for Blade.

I have 2 seconds of other brands. Both are fine I am not even sure why they are seconds. Check it out for $30 I would get it. I have a Rat 3 it's a fine knife.

For 30 bucks, I'd jump on that deal - cosmetic defect or not. The Lawman, too. 60$ for both of those knives is one hell of a nice price.
