Ontario Rat 6 s35vn?

Why may Stainless be important?
Here is a tale of woe.
The woman of the house is cared for.
I make sure she is equipped. Knives, Flashlights, etc.
So i give her a Hattori HA-02 AUS-8, in case of need.
She kept it her picnic thingy, in her the car. She likes to take the grand kids places.
Occasionally i will remember to inquire how an item is doing.
Last year? I asked her how the knife was performing and meeting her needs.
Oh it does good. Chopped up some watermelon, at the lake. did not clean it, put it away and forgot about it.
May i see it please?
OMG! What a disaster.
Got it cleaned up. It still has some reminder stains.

My point?

“It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.”

The watermelon knife could have turned out much different.
Hope she has learned.
I have moved her to an M390 knife this year.

I mean you can’t really take such a low level of care for knives as a universal standard and liquidate the efficiency of stainless steels at rust resistance. One thing is a knife rusting after months of neglect, another thing is a knife rusting from half an hour of rain touching it/getting in the sheath/being in a humid area or even leaving it, clean, in it’s sheath just like you would any other knife. End result is the same, ease of achieving such end result varies greatly, and such process is not be underestimated or flattened to the outcome. Stainless has its obvious advantages but it’s harder to get a stainless to perform as well as a carbon steel in terms of toughness, which is why most stainless steels that are both high in toughness and edge retention (or often even just the latter, though it would be an unfair comparison in my opinion), are deemed as “premium steels”.

I’d get one if it didn’t have finger choil.

5.5’’ blade, the made in Taiwan version is €150ish (€190 in Europe with customs and all), the made in Italy version has an even shorter blade (5.1 inches) and is €270ish as of today.
Man, pricing has went crazy nowadays. I love mine tho. Especially the old logo it has.

Yeah I don’t understand the finger choil craze. Just put the blade closer to the hilt, you’ll have just as much leverage but more blade surface. At least it’s not as bad as those one inch long ricasso’s that don’t even work as choils, so you lose blade surface and you’re not even getting that extra lifetime on your knife that a proper sharpening choil would give you (as it would prevent the blade from becoming visibly indented compared to the tang after just a few sharpenings).

I feel like that thumbnail says it all.
It feels fake. I've never had that reaction to any knife I've ever bought.
I don't think I even made that face when my son was born.

It's the classic YouTuber problem- sensational gets views, so it's hard to find honest videos.
Yes, exactly. I couldn’t have said it better myself

Y53P,I'd say just get the knife that you planned on getting and don't care about what others say.I am sure people here have tons of blades in all shapes, sizes, steels and lengths.

Second, I actually find Gideon Tactical to be one of the better reviewers unlike some others that go on forever or have annoying voice. Also,he's the only one with a hands on review of this knife.

I don't mind Gideon Tactical... but that mouth gape there... google "wojak soyjak" and you'll find it 🤣

I'll just say this:
AEB-L
14C28N
Niolox
MagnaCut

But also, why does it have to be stainless? What will you do? Chop and baton under the sea?

CPM-3V would be perfectly acceptable. I have uncoated 3V knife for years now, and I'm yet to have any issues with rust.

While S35VN is not a bad steel and is fairly tough for stainless, it'd not be my choice for a blade of such size.

So, I get it, they wanted to please the "stainless guys".
And they also wanted a powder steel to call it super steel so they can charge more.
And S35VN was readily available for decent price, while still being tough for stainless.
They also boast about edge retention, while I don't think primary concern of guys buying blades such as BK-2 and ESEE 6 is how long will they keep push cutting paper.

I kinda understand that at thickness and geometry of BK-2 almost anything is going to be tough (sharpened prybar) so S35VN kinda gets a pass there, but ESEE-6 style knife is full flat grind.

I've also seen guys with regular carbon RAT7 and even 5 complain on chipping in various Facebook group.
I've also seen guys posting pics of SP-1 bent in the handle and my SP-53 broke at the handle (there is a hole in the middle of the stick tang, and that's where it snapped).

IDK how will that steel hold up at that geometry and how good will their HT be. But, this is hard pass for me.
Most of my fixed blades are high carbon steel from reputable companies. However, I'd like one quality stainless steel survival knife, to put in the tailgate of my SUV. You never know when you could get stranded in cold weather. I'd prefer to not have to grease my tailgate knife once a month. I think that's a good reason. I have the Work Sharp Field Sharpener in my SUV as well, a long with magnesium and ferro rods. It's best to be prepared for the worst.

I just ordered this knife on Sunday night from a US dealer: their 20% off Xmas coupon code still worked...Street - 20% worked out to be under $135.

I would like to know, if the OP eventually purchased the knife. These are getting harder to find.

I have had mine for about a year or two now not quite sure. I’m so dopey for knives I saw a picture of this knife and within a half hour later had one coming to the house. It’s been a good knife I use it all the time. It keeps a good edge. The only thing that bugs me is Ontario’s corner cutting on final finishes is maddening. They just left the plasma cut edges as is and it makes the knife look cheap. I did fix that but for the money I spent on this knife l was aggravated about that.
