Ontario Rat 7. Is a survival knife ?

Yeh I saw that a while ago.

Not sure D2 is a great choice for a large'ish hard use knife, but that still doesn't seem right.

I seem to recall some other Ontario knives breaking...what was it, an RTAKII by Nuttinfancy or something like that.

ontario had a few that had bad heat treat, i've battoned with mine with no problems but it does make you less than confident in the knife. so i just carry the rowen made knives and i'm confident.

I highly reccommend testing the limits of any tool you plan to depending on.

I can assure you that that knife is the exception. I've owned and used dozens of the Ontario Rat knives with no issues and I'm not easy on my blades.

That sucks. But that why I carry 2 knives. I'm really not crazy just want a back up....

I like the d2 rat7 for a cutting and slicing tool, but I'd bring a hatchet. I hear some people go out with just a razor blade. Good for them, but that ain't me.

I've batonned the livin' sh** out of my D2 RAT-7. I've even batonned it most of the way through a nail sunk in a piece of lumber I was splitting up for kindling. It barely made a dent in the edge. And the knife has taken everything I've thrown at it in stride, nary a whimper. By far one of, if not THE toughest knife I have. It has a special place in my tool box, for when nothing else I have is up to the task. That knife in that video is worse than a bad heat treat, IMO. That is just a downright bad piece of steel.

I'd have to say that my D2 RAT-7 is one knife I'd pretty much stake my life on.

Needless to say, I'm skeptical of the video.

I think there has always been a quality control issue there. I recall a number of Ontario issues people have reported here and other forums such as chipping, rolls, and breaks. There are quite a few videos on youtube showing these types of breaks. When I starting researching knives and determining what I wanted I came across a few issues that turned me away from buying an Ontario (I still have one). But when you get a good one they will last! Moreover, I think they just seem to have consistency issues with their heat treating process. I have also found this true with Range Knives as well. Great steel but inconsistant heat treating will ruin it every time.

^^ I agree.^^ And you never know when your knife will break. Even if used. I was always taught have 2 knives and 2 compasses. An extra knife if one is lost or broken. And extra compass incase your loss and panic. You may not believe your compass and think it's broke. Another one will prove your lost as hell :)

I say its a bad QC problem. I have a 1095 Rat7 that I have beat the living snot out of it numerous times and it asks for more.

Wow, I guess this would be a great argument for carrying at least two knives at any time. I EDC my HEST and will be buying an ESEE-3MIL in two weeks as a car knife. I'llalso have my HEST folder (when they arrive) as a third when driving.
