i purchased the "1095 rat 7 w/serrations". while batonning a large portion of the blade around the serrations broke off... needless to say i was not happy. i called Ontario and they informed me to forward them some photos of the blade. i did so and within a week i had a new one...without the serrations... i compared the blades side by side and the new one has a noticeably different profile then the original one i purchased. to say i got a bad egg may be an understatement in my opinion.
i re-profiled the blade of the broken rat and sanded off the coating and it looks relatively like a warped kukri....
It is definitely a heattreatment problem, no steel can be broken that easily. After all, there are several cases around where Ontario blades broke and the users weren't the problem (At least I read about those in this forum and others).
The serrations also come into play, I saw an RTAKII which broke right at beginning of the serrated portion of the blade. Ontario replaced it, but guess what: The new blade had much thicker profile than the old one.
If you can't any confidence in a tool, it's more or less worthless for me. It doesn't have to be a 'survival situation', just that somebody (including myself) could get hurt by the defective blade is enough for me.
