Ontario RAT-7 or Ranger RD-7?

Sweet, thanks again to everybody here ... I'd still be keen to hear more about the recurve vs the standard blade. A mate of mine was saying you can ask Justin to thin the blade a little - I'm hoping to get this with my RD7.

You can ask Justin to do what ever you want!

I have a satin RD6 with cocobolo handles and a RD3.5 (done basically custom to my reqs) with micarta handles.

The steel is 1/4" way thick. Justin offered to thin it down for me on the RD3.5 but I wanted it as an overkill knife so I left it at 1/4".

I have the RAT 7 and love it. I also like the Ranger Knives, just never owned one. My only issue is I like the RAT 7 blade better...just plain old personal preference.

Stieg,

I am planning to ask Justin to thin my blade down just a bit and I imagine it will still be a headkicker in the chop chop too. A mate commented that the satin finish would be difficult to maintain around the handle areas and so the coated finish is a better option which in retrospect seems a smart play so I will most likely stick with coated.

The only thing I am STILL curious about is the recurve vs non recurve ... pro's and cons.

Get the ranger. I have the TAK 4 in D2. its nice but is no comparison to my RD9 (quality wise). I just sent Justin an email about a smaller version RD3 or 4. Haven't heard back yet but from what i've read about ranger knives this should be no problem for him.

I have the RAT-7 in 1095 and the RD6 and RD9.

I like the RAT-7 alot, a really good cutter and slicer.
A nice medium size knife.
I redid the edge for sharpness and so do not treat it rough
or beat it through wood or such.
It's comfortable to me and I like it.

I have not done anything with the RD6 yet so cannot comment except
to say that it feels short and stout.

The RD9 I really, really like.
When I first got it I did not like the handle at all.
I did some grinding on it and put some wood on it that fits my hand pretty good,
but I plan on getting some micarta someday and putting that on there.
It cuts really good and is strong.
I've beat it through wood with no problem.
I missed a stroke once when chopping and it hit a rock, sparks and such,
very little edge damage and I stoned it out easily.
That was a full power strike so it hit the rock pretty hard.
I really like the size and blade shape of the RD9.
It really does not seem that big when I use it.

So, your choice if you can't have both.
I'd say that if you were going to just cut and slice, the RAT-7 would be just fine.
If you want to get a little rough with it, go for one of the Rangers.

Then again, a big strong chopper and a smaller cutter/slicer is what you need to carry.
One knife just won't do it, well, it will, but why try.

I have both and I prefer the Rat7 because it feels more secure and the ranger not so due to the front guard being very short. Both makers seem to back up their product 100% and I know for a fact that Jeff will make things right if there's any problem with the blade that's got his name on it.
