Ontario RAT Model 1 Folder?

Never had a folder from them but there fixed blades are rock solid pieces of work for not alot of dough.

The RAT is a solid knife, I use it daily at work, never a problem. Pictured here with my TAK-1

I have a RAT-3 and have handled/fondled/examined the RAT-5 & 7 and the TAK1. These are SOLID knives.... NOT fancy..... NOT 1/4" "Strider steel".... just SOLID, simple workers.

I've been looking at the RAT folder too on the internet. I haven't handled one, but I'm willing to bet it'll follow the standards of the rest of Ontario's RAT and TAK knives. I'm pretty sure they're only about $60 or so bones,... I'd probably be willing to risk it without handling at that price (but I'm eyeing another Snody FB right now ) :)

There have been some recent threads here on the RAT folder.

Very positive on the knife.

It is made in Taiwan, BTW, if that's of any interest to you.

I have one and it is and excellent folding knife takes a good edge and holds it decently well. The grip is comfortable. I have a pe black blade. I would like to see it in D-2 but as is it is an excellent value.

A very solid knife for the money. The scales a tad 'slick' but that's a minor gripe - imo. Strong lock-up.

Thanks for all the input! I ordered one last night (from SMKW)and can't wait to get it and test it out.

I have one - don't think you will be disappointed. Suprisingly well built for the money. It's a cutter:) I flipped the thumb stud over and ground out the indent a bit to make it easier to open lefty:)

i have one, had it about 2 months. i've cut, sawed, pried, and scraped. this knife is very solid. i also have a rat 7 in d2. folder is aus 8 but definitely on the up and up in quality. i modified my handle so it wouldnt be so slippery, other than that, i recamend this knife to anyone!

How did you modify the handle? (I haven't gotten it yet so I can't judge as to whether its too slick or not)

I suspect you would rough it up with sandpaper, I will let secretagentman answer that one. I found that the excellent handle contour allows for a firm enough grip for me, so no mods were required. Your mileage may vary.

Just got it yesterday! Very sharp and quality was as expected. Only complaints are that the thumb stud is not ambidextrous and is quickly ruining my nail (I don't care how it looks but its kinda sore), the pocket clip is BIG (was a little stiff but I just clipped it to a GI pistol belt and flexed it), and the grip seems somewhat slick. Other than that its great. The only thing I've cut with it is my customary paracord test which it sliced through very well and I shaved a spot on my arm ( I probably should've found another spot because this is gonna make my girlfriend wonder :p ) Seems to be a great utility knife for the feild and has a bit of an emphasis on chopping but I don't intend on doing any serious chopping with a folder.

Hammer17,
Glad you got the new toy, on the stud, it is reversible but no, not ambi, although that should not have been a surprise:confused: Regarding the clip, comparing my RAT to my Endura, the Spyderco Endura clip is larger. The RAT clip seems about the right size for the knife. Give it a week or two of EDC and I'm sure you will admire its many attributes.:)

i took my dremel out, put on a drum sander, not sure what size.. half the size of an average pinky? and put uniform gouges in it about 1/4 of the depth of the size of the drum sander. i went from shortways.. from spine to (where fingers go when holding the knife) about 10 on each side did very nicely.. took some fine sandpaper and smoothed it out a bit. excellent handle!

Thanks for the advice. I don't think I'll go that far in my modifications though. This knife kinda reminds me of a Spyderco Military...
