Ontario sp10 marine raider mods

My first try at silver solder seemed to work pretty well. I think it has bonded the bolt into place effectively. So now time for the leather washers.

Thanks for showing the progress. Did you replace the guard? This will be a looker when it’s done!

no, guard is steel and welded on. It already feels pretty good in hand. yet handle is still too big all over. The tricky part for me now is to remove just the right amount without too much. may use files and sandpaper from here on to make sure I dont take off too much handle.

I replaced a Kabar Bowie handle with a combination of leather and wood. worked pretty well, yet doesnt have the look of a steel pommel

Wow, that is some impressive work dude, nicely done! That's like a modern blade shape taken back in time.

My ONLY nit is that it would look better with an inset nut on the tang. Otherwise looks awesome!

I agree with you, yet with my limited machining skills and equipment I couldnt figure out how to do it. May try on my next one.
I get stumped trying to figure out how to match my bolt size and threads to the tang nuts from knife supply shops.

Ontario fixed blades are excellent bang for buck.Ill get one too and modify the blade and make similar handle, since my budget at moment doesnt allow me to get nice custom or fallkniven-blackjack-Bark river bowie-cold steel san mai bowie. Also i plan to get one of Ontario pilot survival knives with plastic handle and make it full convex with wood-leather handle and new leather sheath. My buddy has few of these and ive used it many times as beater knife and its not bad at all,but with full convex will slice like crazy. Some of my friends want me to regrind their Kabar and Ontario knives too as they use it for hunting often.

Some of best bung for buck knives for camping-survival-hunting.If youre on tight budget buy Ontario fixed blade, almoat any model will not dissapoint you with some small mods. They should change the grinds little but otherwise are perfect,Especially pilot survival knife

You could epoxy another piece of micarta or wood to the end. That would make it easy to cut out the right size. However, some would consider this “cheating” I guess. You could also add a predesigned pommel from online shops.

The shape is about right, the handle is soaked with wax and mineral oil, so I just need to reblue the metal guard and pommel, and I am happy. Should I blue or patina the blade? I would also like to extend the false edge toward the hilt a couple inches, yet not sure how to do it.

I have used cold blue. seems rust bluing might be easier before adding the handle?

Possibly, but cold bluing is terrible. Rust blue is far more durable and protects like a good patina.
