Which would you choose and why? Thanks for any info. I always enjoy reading everyones post. Figure I would have one every now and then now. ;)

I'd go with the Becker. Ontario makes lots of great knives, but the SP50 is full flat grind. I like my choppers to have more meat in the grind.

I'd get the BK9 too. It has been around for quite a while, and it wouldn't still be here if it didn't work.

Hello,

They are two completely different knives. The bk9 is .1875 and the sp50 is .25. The Becker isnt as good a chopper compared to the sp50. The grip on the bk9 is too slick and transfers a good amount of shock to your hand when chopping. The sp50 handle is very grippy and absorbs alot of shock. The bk9 is lighter and feels better balanced. The sp50 is a serious chopper and splits wood very well. The bk9 is a lot lighter and can do a little bit of everything. If you want a big heavy chopper get the sp50. If you want something easier to back pack with that is good at alot of different things go with the bk9. I have them both and like them both but for different reasons.

Out,

Chris

Thanks for all of the replies. I should have been more clear. Im looking at a bit of a multipurpose knife but I would also like for it to be a decent chopper and splitting knife for batoning. I like the resign of the becker but prefer the thicker blade of the SP50. Would the Ontario RD9 or Rtak II be a good compromise? I would really like to get something big with a 1/4 blade. Thanks for any more info.

BK9 all day every day. The handle is fantastic - not slick but grippy (though I still don't understand why it works so well :D ). It chops like a frigger, is well balanced and does the sort of stuff a knife ought to do.

Here - look at my BK9 infomercial.

See it chop!

I also own both and I agree with this statement by socalkid.

The ontario sp50 is made of 5160 (spring steel?) so it might be tougher then the bk9's 1095 cro-van, especially sinse the sp50 is quarter of an inch thick. you probably could not go rong with one of each, I think i am going to go this route also
