I was wondering if anyone here has had an opportunity to play with the new Ontario TAK knife from Randall's Adventure and Training. I think Mr. Randall has designed my perfect woods knife, but I'd like some input before I order one. (On an unrelated note, any idea when 1sks will begin shipping them?) :)
I'd like to thank this group as well for the fantastic info here, I can't say it enough!

Thanks in advance,
Pat

I don't think they have hit the open market yet, 1SKS has them on backorder. I believe this is the "ideal" woods knife too, although I would have liked to have seen it 5/32 instead of 3/16, but that's just my personal take. I would definatly live with it as is!
1095,and a full flat grind , and a reasonable price too sure makes it attractive .

i have an rtak made by newt livesay and they are a very good knife, a little big for hardwood forest, in my mind, but an excellent concept. they seem to cut green vegitation better than chopping hard woods in my experience with the one i have but this knife was developed by j randall for the jungle afterall. i am very satisfied with the knife as far as the manufacurer is concerned. i have an air assault, it is also a great knife i would reccomend newt livesay for a great honest blade 1095 done just right.

the blade chipping was/is a problem on the modle from Ontario, not the Orignal from Newt Livesay. I had one from Newt and it cut like a dream on everything. I have read reports good and bad on the RTAK from ontario, so they might have had a bad batch come out of heat treat. If you can get one from Newt you won't have any problems.

I made the proto of the TAK for Jeff and I would highly recomend the design! I would say that 90% of your cutting chores can be done with this knife(10% being chopping and splitting) The RAT crew has really hit the nail on the head with this knife. It even has that PC look to it so as not to offend any of the "civilized" folk :) I think the TAK is gonna be a real winner.

Been a while since I checked this thread, thanks for the input.
I have compared it with the howling rat, so I broke down and ordered both. :) still waiting on delivery...maybe I'll do a comparison if folks think it worthwile.
Thanks again for the info!

A couple of observations between the SRK Howling Rat and the
TAK. The TAK is cheaper by about $20 depending on where you purchase
the TAK. The HR has a better sheath IMO than the TAK. There is a
lot of favorable comment on the synthetic rubber handle of the HR
and it seem to work especially well as executed on the SRK knives,
however I prefer micarta or G10 such as on the TAK, if for no other reason the grip can be customized to suit the individual user or replaced if damaged. Given the past QC issues with Ontario, I would feel more confident with the SRK knives in that area.
