I can get plain instant noodles for a fraction of the cost of those ramen packs .
Anybody have ideas for inexpensive and hopefully nutricious flavourings for them ?
I am thinking instant chicken soup . Hopefully one that doesn,t taste like they left the feathers on the chicken . :foot:

Homemade or innovative ideas are welcome as well .

Kevin,

I fry hamburger meat at least 80/20 lean with seasonings, salt, pepper, soy sauce, and garlic, when the meat is done I add onions and a bag of mixed vegatables. I then only cook for a few more minutes until the onions are just turning clear. I then put the whole thing in my dehydrator and dehydrate until the mixture is totally dehydrated.

When I am ready to eat I rehydrate for an hour or so then add to my ramen, it rehydrates very well and turns ramen into a meal instead of a snack. As far as I can tell it does not matter what flavor ramen I add it to even with chicken flavors it tastes good. This mixture, if the meat is lean enough, keeps forever as far as I can tell, I have had some in the bottom of my pack for a long time, fixed it up and ate it with no ill effects to myself or the flavor. They seem to work best if not cooked as a part of the concoction. cook the noodles separately then add to the other stuff.
Try any of the bullion cubes/powders, soups, even gravy mixes. The hamburger trick works really well, add in some cheese (if you have a really non stick pan try frying the noodle/hamburger cheese concoction untill the cheese browns and starts to go crispy. Noodles and scrambled eggs (Make separately then toss together). Noodles and melted cheeze (think (twisted) macaroni and cheese). Throw some beanless chili and cream of mushroom soup together with some catsup (and possibly hamburger) serve like spagetti. Cream of mushroom soup and tuna fish (bake as a cassarole). Use interchangeably in pretty much any pasta recipee.

(I was, once, a poor but well fed student.)
Enjoy!

I had crap dinner with tomato soup thrown in for supper . That is as far down the old poverty pipeline I want to go . The hamburger noodle idea sounds viable if labour intensive . Cook , dehydrate , rehydrate , cook . A couple of meals like that could flesh out a larder .

The Boulion sounds a little ordinary to me . Is there any nutrition in there ? I actually have some liquid beef boulion so I,m going to put my money where my mouth is . Maybe if I threw in a few dehydrated vegetables ?

Keep the ideas coming . WE are on our way .

Kevin,
It is with out a doubt labor intensive when you are at home, when you are in the woods it is very simple, very good and very filling, and most of all, light.

If I am fixing ramen noodle surprise at home I forego the dehydrate/rehydrate phase. I simply cook the hamburger as before with what ever fresh vegatables I want. Brocoli, cabbage, and green beans are some of my favorites, when it is done add the cooked noodles and flavor packet.

I spend a lot of time in the field, months at a time, I always have a supply of pogie bait and my mini trangia. I have cooked up some very good meals that I dehydrate myself, my soldiers are usually begging after the first week or so on MREs. Did you know that chili dehydrates and rehydrates very well as does beef stew, add some minute rice and have a very good, very light meal. I mix the rice and dehydrated food before hand in single servings then vacuum seal with a food saver.

Uhhhhh dehydrate chili ? Can you do that in one of those sieve/shelf dehydrators ? That sounds mighty good . A good spicy bowl of chili can take your mind off a drizzly day .

You have good ideas . I am trying to replace the flavour packet ramen crap . I have the idea I can get very good dried noodles in chinatown to try and up taste and nutrition .

Dehydrating chili with a regular dehydrater tray would get pretty messy:D

I use the plastic thingy, obviously I don't know the proper name, that is placed in the tray to make fruit leathers or to dry any juicy item. Usually a dehydrator comes with one but you can buy extras. Be sure to spray it with a slight coating of Pam before dehydrating or you will never get your dried chili off of it.

I like the Korean kimchi noodles, very spicy. Kimchi dehydrates well also.;)

Korean Kimchi ? sounds delish .

I found my dehydrator sitting on top of a garbage can . It was new except for a little apple residue . I guess it was too much like work for someone . No plastic things with it though . No place to buy them around here . I have just about wore it out . I replaced the element supports with paper clips . I,ve cracked a tray or two . One day I would like to get one equiped with a small fan .

Lots of ramen recipes here... There's something of a subculture around eating ramen in new, creative way. I know ramen was a staple of my diet in my broke college days...

I remember that's when I thought my Pakistan-made 'paratrooper' knife was the hottest thing since sliced bread...

MG Sadivar what a great site . I had no idea ramen was so popular . I am going to try a peanut butter recipe tonite . Maybe an egg breakfast ramen tomorrow .

Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Had peanut butter , garlic , lemon juice , soya sauce , honey ramen tonite . Haute cuisine ? Not a chance . Yummy good? Easy to prepare ? You betcha . In a pinch in the field you could do this in one pot/frypan . Substitute or leave out one or two ingredients ? I bet you don,t really need honey . A touch more margarine and a pinch of sugar would do .

I am going to try a minimal peanut butter sauce . Forget the lemon juice .(I might miss that .)
Soya sauce ? those little packets would travel well . Garlic? Travels pretty well . The original recipe actually called for powder not sauted garlic . Peanut butter could be substituted by crushed peanuts/cashews . That site easily has a hundred recipes .

The plain noodles cooked up well . A little more body to them than packaged ramen .
Whats good about this is that you can double up for two people easily if someone shows up unannounced . More noodles and throw in more peanut butter . Yum .(Oops I said that .)

Thanks for this site. Very cool. When I backpack I've just been eating ramen with peanuts and some chopped green onions. Now I've got something new to try.

I do this, but you may not like the taste. Which reminds me of the saying, "One man's meat, is another man's poison".

So here goes. Boil the ramen as directed. Then, when to the consistency that you like it, drain all water and immediately season with these ingredients in the proportions that you like:

Fish sauce
Sugar
Lime juice
Hot chili

Toss noodles, then add choped green onions and any cooked meat, then toss to coat. EAT.

Fish sauce? Where to get ? Best brand ? Is it yucky ? Does it keep?

You can find fish sauce in the Asian food section of any market. Yucky? Not to me. I think it give meat a more meaty favor. I don't know about brands. Someone else is going to answer that but I use Tiparos. Its a Thai sauce. The bottle says "do not store under refrigeration". I just keep mine in the pantry.

Crap, now you guys have got me looking at ramen noodles. Just when I thought I had my culinary experiments whittled down to omelets and chili. I always thought ramen noodles were for anorexic teenage girls. Must not be so if Kevin's eating them :D

Um, kimchi! I like kimchi better then the entire rest of a Korean meal.

kimchi! I picked up a spicy seafood and another one with no label that just has everything outlined in a very hot looking red . Both by the same company . One in a bag and the other set up like a bowl .

I have a scampi tail I am going to cook in one and a very nice looking raw shrimp I am going to cook in the other .

I also bought 18 pounds of long grained rice so I,ll have to start a thread on that . Check out the new threads .

Open package and throw seasoning pack in the garbage, cook until it is the desired consistency, drain, add butter and parmesan cheese.

Po Boy Alfredo.
