Spent the day running saw, taking down a very dead pine tree for a client. Afterwards got treated to a salmon BBQ at one of the local lake, about 10 kms from the village, up in the mountains.

had a knife on me. (MANIX) thats it. (aside from my tree gear)

but it was ok, rigged up the jumper cables to the truck battery, pulled the fuel filter and drained it into the tinder and fuzzsticks and BZZZZZZZT! WOOSH! had fire.

its very rare that i dont have an woods essentials kit, but i think i did ok.

What are some tricks ya'll have done to improvise? :D

Car camping, trying to light some tiki torches. NOBODY has matches or a lighter (I was just visiting for the day).

I had my cook kit which is an alcohol stove and ferro rod. Pour a little alcohol on the wick, strike with spark, and we have flame.

Of course, I also had to start their camp fire before I left. When my friends tell me they are going "camping" I just laugh. :)

No shoelace to start a bow drill? lol

I always have a lighter on me. If not, then theres always the ferro/magnesium bar I keep in my pack.

Car lighter to ignite toilet paper. Didn't work as well as I thought, but eventually got a flame going. Didn't think of the jumper cables but that is cool. Not sure I would have ignited gasoline with that approach though.

it was'nt a lot, about a tablespoon over some cedar shavings.

build a kit for the truck as we speak, inside a Pelican 1020 case, which will be mounted under the hood beside the battery, so i wont forget it....

That is a really good idea - and it doesn't use up the valuable glove compartment space that gets all cluttered and too packed.

Use the car lighter to ignite punky wood, true or false tinder fungus (or anything else that will glow-smoulder) and use it the same way as a friction fire coal.

I've even been without the jumper cables and pulled the coil wire for a spark to ignite some gas on a rag. Kind of scary/exciting.....

When I'm in one of the 'Marts, I look for the cheap multi-packs of disposable lighters and make sure I have them in every pack, bag, vehicle, etc. so I'm not without. Since then, I've put ferro/mag blocks most everywhere, too.

Stay sharp,
