oosic

I just got a couple of piece of oosic that I'm going to be making hidden tang knives with. Does anyone who's used this material have any tips on how to cut out the hole for the tang? The reason I ask is that there's a pretty large channel running through the middle of the oosic that's not solid; much larger than the blade tang is going to be. I guess it's where the bone marrow was. Will that present any problems?

Thanks,

Ryan

You've sent them into smirk mode, Ryan. What they're laughing about is the type of bone that oosic is, and it never had marrow in that channel.
I'd give it a good buttcap and fill it with 2-ton epoxy.

Ryan, I must apologize, my knowledge of oosic far exceeds my practical experience with it (and I don't know that much either, just what it is.) Oz's suggestion sounds good to me.-Guy T.

Dude; All finished grinning now. As for what to do with it, just remove as much of the soft material as you can and fill it with some type of epoxy. For this application it's not really critical, so just use what's cheap. If you cut some wedges into the tang before you bed it in the epoxy you can probably get away without mechanicaly attaching the buttcap. That's assuming you are using oosic for the entire handle. If your using just using it as a spacer, you can clamp the rest of the handle up snug with the epoxy and not worry about the butt end.

Ryan,
Drill a small hole through the tang with an air craft (extended) drill – keeping it as straight as possible by clearing the chips frequently (about every ¼”).
Next clamp it in a good vise with a rag wrapped around it to protect it from getting scarred. Heat the tang of the knife (dull red) and push it into the handle a little at a time – burning the predrilled hole to fit the tang perfectly. This takes patience and it stinks like – well I can’t describe it but my wife stays out of the shop.

(course she won't touch oosic at all either.) Seal up the rest of the middle with over night epoxy. Slow epoxy works better on spongy stuff like this.
Only use wedges if needed. Clamp it all in place when you’re ready and let it set up over night.
Let me know if I can help anymore.

Should've known better than to think I could start a thread about oosic without Beavis and Butthead dropping by.

I think I'm leaning toward removing the... snicker... "spongy stuff"... giggle... and filling the... heh,heh... "channel" with epoxy and letting the whole thing harden.

I like Gene's idea, but when your shop also happens to be your bedroom... well let's just say I'm sort of trying not to stink the place up too badly!

Thanks guys.

I've never seen a knife with an oosic handle.
Could somebody post a pic of one ? Is the stuff expensive ?

I've heard mention of oosic, before, never seen it though, a picture would be great if someone's got one handy. Also, just what kind of animal does it come from, I can't remember.

Michael's got some pictures of the stuff in raw state on his website, toward the bottom of the page below.

It's not too expensive; I got a couple of large pieces (about 7" long and maybe 3-4" diamater) for $25 each.

HEHEHE, That is the one she almost dropped when she was admiring it and her husband Gene told her what an oosic was.

Remember, if you are showing knives made with material, let people know what it is BEFORE they pick it up, or AFTER they set it back down. I prefer after, that way you can enjoy the reaction you get..

Mike:

you've got a great sense of humor. I've been showing off the piece I got from you and I notice people are not offended but seem to kind of get curious when I tell them what it is. Sort of like the look I get when I tell them the slab of rock they just handled is really Dinosaur poop.

Coprolites, also known as fossil dino poo, can make nice handles. Many of the specimens I have seen are quite colorful, and they take a good polish. I can get it, along with many other oddball fossils and minerals.

Problem is that it is hard to sell anything called poop, so more than likely I will have to come up with a more colorful term for the material, like "Bung Gems", or "Sphinct Stone" or something like that..Any other suggestions?

hehe, now i can make a whole line of "crappy" knives. what's that stuff go for? i'd like to see a picture of a knife with it. what does it smell like when cutting it?
pawnbroker,
could you post a pic of the knife when your finished?

Magnum;

It has no smell at all. I leave a piece on my table at gun shows and when people ask what it is I tell them to lick it and it actually has no taste.I will let you know when the knife is finished.
