Pancake for a user you want to draw easily. Open spine slows you down popping the strap off and fastening for every draw, but it does look neat.
Now a clamshell spine is pretty cool on a recurve user as long as you don't mind scratches.
 
Why not a regular taco sheath?

IMO, only recurve knives really benefit from an open back. And many pancake sheaths, particularly on bigger knives, just look like boat paddles to me.

I really like those kydex colors. :D
