Open carry at the grocery store

I went to the local ACE Hardware the other day and figured I would see what kind of pocket knives they had. I saw an older gentleman stocking shelves. I walked up and said I was looking for a pocket knife. He looked at me for a second and then reached in his pocket and pulled out his knife. I had to explain that I didn’t want to borrow his knife but was looking for knives for sale.

I've seen the guys and girls in the produce dept carry fixed blades in heavy duty leather sheaths from their belts. I'd guess it was some kind of vegetable knife. Maybe I'll ask one of them one day.

Usually not any special knife. I have seen almost any small (usually less than 3") fixed blade being used. I used to carry a Gerber Pixie and used it for everything from trimming lettuce and corn to opening sacks of potatos.

I've been working in the grocery business for over 27 years and have always carried a knife to work. I cut alot of cardboard and plastic and even though I have a casecutter, I still use my knife quite often. When they came up with the weapons at work bullsh--t, my knife was considered a tool for work. Besides, everyone knows I'm into knives and I'm a knifemaker so I don't have to worry about any problems.

Here in Texas it is very common to see knives clipped to pockets. I never leave the house without one and usually have a concealed handgun (I have a CCW). ;)

i work at circuitcity in ohio, about 3 miles from a military airbase, and we usually get a bunch of military personnel from all over the country buying stuff.. i was selling one of these people a memory card and he wanted to get and wanted me to show him how it went in the camera. so i went to go get a razorblade to open it (i cant bust out my gerber in front of customers) and he reaches into his vest and pulls out a large green folding knife with a 3.5" blade, he pulled it off a shoulder holster and opened it realllly fast. and ive never seen anyone open one that fast before... i was like "wow, thats a nice knife you got there", and hes like yeah they give u pretty good ones in the military, and he let me look at it and hold it... it was realllly heavy for the size of it, and felt indestructible..... i wanted to steal it.....

I am an electrician and we do a lot of work at the court houses. Nothing better than having my 110 on my hip and walking straight through the metal detecter ( of course I do have my county badge on ) But people do make comments since I am 300#s and shave my head. :D Maybe I'm to fat...

Your gun clerk doesn't know very much.

You should see the utility knife/box cutter that one of our secretaries at work keeps in her desk. It looks like something Hannibal would drool over . The first time I saw it I was even a little taken back. With the blade extended it resembles a karambit!

I use a blade every day at work for opening boxes or cutting food. The only snide comments are usually followed with a chuckle. Some people are just programmed for that sort of thing I guess.

I'm just a cook, and all we have is crappy, crappy knives. So I bring my own. Still have a fixed blade or folder on me. The funny part is the other 2 cooks don't know how to sharpen knives, and the only other person carrying a knife, is a waitress(Spyderco). Funny cause she carries it inside her waist band in the front of her little hip huggers. I should post a pic.

I've heard from gun clerks that silencers generally don't function on handguns.

Depends. There's only so much that one can dampen the sound and the larger the caliber, the more work that a sound suppressor has to do. Which means that it has to be bigger. I have many firearms and the 1911 is my favorite. But I can't imagine open carrying one with a silencer on it. It makes for one long pistola, and that does not promote comfortable carry situations. I find it "odd" that someone would open-carry with a silenced weapon. But hey, to each his or her own.

The only suppressed weapons that I am interested in are a good semi-auto .22 pistol (for being REALLY quiet) and something like a suppressed H&K MP-5. Other than that, I like the noise that my guns generate.

Back to the subject, I work with lots of cops, so I see a lot of stuff from Spyderco and some folding tanto's. I carry a cheap little folder right now (I am civilian at a local government agency and made to carry a 2" blade or less). I just bought a Kershaw Rainbow Chive and Leek and love them. So I plan to buy a plain, stainless Chive for daily carry in the near future. If ya gotta be stuck with a 2" blade, then it appears that the Chive is a good one to be stuck with.

My friend, you should take a good, close look at the Spyderco Dodo.

This is THE ultimate 2" blade.

I have to deal with the 2" blade limit crap at my job too and this knife has pretty much benched all my other 2" bladed folders.

Full size ergonomic grip, blue G-10 handle, hook type recurved blade as is found on the Spyderco Cricket and the Dodo's blade steel is S30V. Also has the interesting "Ball Lock". It's a bit different but very solid and easy to use after a little practice. Works a bit like the Axis Lock found on many Benchmade knives now.

In my "at work" rotation, I used to carry a Chive, a FRN Cricket, a SS Cricket, a Pegasus or a Meercat. They're all collecting dust in my glove box now. I carry the SS Cricket with the Dodo sometimes when I get the urge to carry two at once but that seems to be lessening as time moves on. The Dodo is just too good. :D

I carry a CRKT M16 (the titanium handled one) clipped in my pocket all the time. Never had a problem.

Saw an old guy at McDonalds today, behind the counter with a large hunting folder in a very beat up leather sheath.

I was in a Walgreens, in the LA area, a few months ago, patiently waiting in line (with a Lum Chinese Folder cliped to my pocket) very discreetly checking out the female cashier. The customer in front of me hands her a page from a newspaper with a coupon on it. In the blink of an eye she reaches into her vest pocket, pulls out and opens, with one hand, a 3" long serrated hawkbill. Makes 3 lightening fast cuts. Takes the coupon, puts it away, hands back the rest of the page to the old dude and closes and drops the knife back into her vest pocket ( no clip) Total time like 5 seconds flat!!! I was wanted to say something to her, but was stunned, totally speechless. It happened so fast I could not even ID the knife. All I could think was their were never girls like this around when I was single.

Working in a knife store I often see people with clip knives of all types. The most popular at the moment is the Kershaw Leek. The rarest thing to see is someone with a sheath strapped to their belt. In that case there is only one scary guy who comes by the store with big leather sheath strapped to his side. Oh yes, and one man who came in wearing a fallkniven, that made me simultaneously interested and jealous at the same.

Everyone I've seen in NYC has a CRKT M16 of some sort as the most popular knife, usually in a nylon pouch. Never seen guys with sheathed knives, since they are usually longer than 4" and they are technically illegal

Just bought a Berreta Xtrema 3.5 at Wild Sports and while going through the painstaking process (CA SUCKS!!!) the box had to opened, then re-taped and opened again at least two times, and the dude behind the counter had to use a knife; it was pretty cool. I offered him mine, but he already had one, wow! (Sarcasm)

Wild sports is pretty cool, but way overpriced. You can go to the Roseville Galleria and see some good stuff at Merlo's Cutlery, but it is even more over priced. I live up in Auburn, keep an eye out for the Roadrunner gun, knife, coin and kitchen sink show at Cal Expo, I have gotten some really good finds there. It's rare to see a pocket clip here in Cali any more, I got my buddy at work started, he used to carry a Kershaw something-or-other assisted opener, but I got him off the gizmo trick knife and into a Mini-Grip. Now if I can only get him off the serrated edge...
