open CPU surgery

Further ramblings... If the above doesn't work DIJ and you want further help form the geeks here at the HI Forum then please post the following:

1) E-X-A-C-T-L-Y what did you buy and what was preinstalled together?
2) What are you using from your previous system?
3) Product names and version numbers would go a long way top helping solve this puzzle

Windows XP.
I have a sony dvd-r, cd rom, 80 gb hdd, nvidia 5500 256 video, sound blaster live, all of which work fine with the old motherboard/cpu.
My keyboard is a gateway sk-9910u

What system memory are you using in this new setup? This is important.

I'm tyring to find incompatibility issues. Many times OC'd systems require high quality memory to run stably. If your still using Kingston 'value series' memory (from your previous setup) and trying to push the envelope, the old memory simply won't take the FSB speed increase.

OC'ing is a combination of increasing the FSB speed, the CPU multiplier and the core voltage. It requires a good power source, an overclockable MoBo, quality sytem memory and a excellent cooling system.

oh and Achkkkk Phtttttt!

Is your Keyboard a USB keyboard? I don't think the USB drivers load in safe mode. If you have a USB to PS2 adapter (comes with many USB mice & keyboards) you can possibly use it to plug your keyboard into the PS2 port which is supported in safe mode and dos.

OK. We are in orbit and running at 100%

The keyboard was messed up because of the "USB legacy" thing in bios was not enabled.
That allowed me to boot from the windows DVD and reinstall.
All my emails are gone, but I backed up everything else, so we are good to go!

i am so happy to be reloading all of my software insted of looking at 350$ worth of poop on my floor.

jmxcepter,

nice catch, i spend so much time with our & our customers hp/compaq servers that i tend to forget that usb thing in the bios (the few hundred servers i look after at work don't use usb kbd/mice, in fact they don't HAVE screens, kbd's or mice ( we use remote connections to play with them) unless we plug in a trolley with screen, kbd, moose on it if remote don't work, and them's all ps2 types to make sure they work.

danny, glad your back on line with us with a working toy, just goes to show we're not all just a bunch of steel addicts & pretty faces.

I might be an amature geek, but I've been at it since Win 95 was new an dI was proud of a 486DX100 with a whole 16mb of RAM! I got tired of paying someone else to fix my computers a long time ago (those guys charge a lot!) and bought a couple books. Been fixing/building machines ever since and occasionally do some charity IT work.

Even though all my spare cash these days goes into my shop tools, it's not that long ago that I was chasing the most overclockable CPU and the baddest video card around. My machine's geting tired these days. Only a P4C 2.4 overclocked to 3ghz with a gig of PC3500 Corsair XMS DDR, a 128mb GeForce FX5900 and a pair of 80gb Maxtor Diamond Max 9 SATA drives in striped RAID 0 for 160gb together. Once it was cool, now it's passable and runs most current games, with most of the eye candy on, but not all of it:( No PCIX, no gigabit ethernet, tiny drives.....what's a boy to do?

Maximum PC magazine helped a lot over the years too.

amazing depth and breadth of knowledge here; remarkable generosity of spirit.

I din't unnerstand nothing, but loved all the help pouring in. Really decent human beinks.

Glad it works.
