Opening a big coil of spring steel without getting killed?

When handling something like this on an industrial shear, the normal way is to use some sliding c-clamps to keep most of the coil together while you cut off only the part you need to work at any given time; to store it again afterwards, you could either just chain it or use some shipping banding through the coil to keep it wound.

Thanks for all the great advice guys! I think I'll pick up a few cheap clamps from Harbor-Freight and then cut it into six foot or so bars.

I love the idea of throwing it off the roof, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't go over too well with the neighbors. :)

Haha, I don't think I fully grasped what you had going on... Definitely take some video no matter what you decide to to!

You're right.... it would probably go through them.

I think the clamps are the way to go..... but I have grown quite fond of a slightly more adventurous approach...

This thread is hilarious! I did once have to deal with a 6" wide bandsaw blade that had a
mind of its own.
