opening cans with a traditional folder

Nope. Wouldn't do it. Wouldn't be right. Wouldn't be prudent.

I've never tried opening a can with a pocket knife but then I've carried a P-38 in my wallet (as stated above) & one on my key chain since I was 17 (when I entered the army).

I'v done it.... but then again i did alot of silly things when i was a kid. There are much safer and easier ways to get into a can w/o a can opener as demonstrated in that clip earlier in the thread.

I've done it when needed, a sheepsfoot blade works best, ya always gotta think to yourself, where ist the blade gonna wind up if I slip?

Hell I used to open 55 gallon drums witha a ......................................................lawn mower blade, (you thought I was gonna say slip joint).

There is a way to use your thumb as a pivot point and rock the blade around the cans edge, kinda like ya would a opener on a scout knife 'cept you're usin' your thumb for leverage and as a fulcrum instead of hookin' the lip of the can as a pivot.

I just received a Rough Rider Scout model that I won in an auction. I've never seen this style can opener before and was wondering how you use it?

The little blade is sharp enough I'm almost tempted to take the thumb stud off and just use it as a blade. I'd probably mess up the grind sharpening it but it would make a great little blade to cut plastic packaging with the appropriate cutting surface.

the 'thumb stud' is actually the fulcrum when you open cans, stick the blade in the can lid at about 45 degrees, edge up, stub resting on the rim, rock your way around, cutting upwards and forwards rather than down and back like with most other hook shape openers. watch where you put your off hand fingers.

don't remove the stud. ;)
