What do you think? Appropriate tool for the job?:D

Can't wait till it gets here.

That may be more knife than you need for the job. I whacked a coconut with a Busse FFBM one time, and the damned thing exploded like a bomb. The coconut, not the Busse. It was so loud, it brought the neighbors out on the porch! The coconut launched pieces of itself a good 20' In hindsight, I probably put a little too much "English" on it. :D A knife like that doesn't require much force to blast open a coconut.
I love the knife in the OP, BTW. That thing is EVIL looking. In a good way.

Next time you open a coconut you'd better get video--I'd like to see that! :D

It was pretty rad. A waste of a perfectly good coconut, but it opened my eyes to the destructive potential of a large chopper, that's for sure. Let's see your machete do that! :D

Oooh...I'm not making any promises, but I may get a chance to go at it this weekend. I'll be sure to get a video if I do! :D

And mega awesome choppy cleaver of death, halromberg! May I ask who the maker was?

I've cleaved a coconut with a Busse Battle Mistress E. It hacked the coconut cleanly in two in a single stroke. It's easy to split a coconut with a knife.

For me, the easy way to open coconuts is to throw them high in the air and let them smash on the rocks. No knife necessary.

Cool knife, halromberg.

Congrats on an awesome looking knife:thumbup: When I saw it I immediately contacted the maker to have one made for myself:D Are you gonna put it to good use???

Did you guys see Les Stroud open a coconut perfectly, using a salvaged boat propeller? Craziest thing I've ever seen him do.

I've only opened a coconut once, but I used a SAK's awl to ake a hole and drink the coconut milk. Then I used a Cold Steel Kukri Machete to split the coconut in half - it was very easy

It works. I used the corner of a concrete stair to open a coconut. Simply hit it on the edge of the stair(or whatever other somewhat "edged" item you have), all the way around the coconut, and it neatly splits in half. You don't even need to hit it hard, just a little bit more than a tap will do it.

As a little kid, growing up on Miami Beach (Normandy Island), I always just used a cheap hardware store hatchet that my mother had, and a screw driver. Hatchet took off the husk, the screw driver drilled out the eyes so I could drink the milk. The hammer part of the hatchet shattered the nut. Pried the meat out with the screwdriver.

Not very romantic or tactical but got the job done.

While I would never deny anyone the pleasure of hacking away at green coconuts with any manner of dangerous steel, thin and sharp works very well. I think it is easier to open them with a Mora than my BK-7.
