Opening Day of Dove Season

It's been 40 years since I did any dove hunting.

The doves would fly to roost just before sundown here in Florida.
Would get my limit everyday.
I used to really enjoy being out there during the season.

Good memories. :)

Great to see you out enjoying the opener. Grouse season opened today in the Pacific Northwest but I am stuck on shift Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. But look out my BUCK 118, 110, my two dogs and I will be out Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Stay Safe.
Bob

Had our dove opener today, nothing like Buck knives, Browning shotguns, and 16 gauge Remington shells to make it all come together. The ceremonial beginning of the 2014-2015 hunting season is done and it was fun! OH

Stumps, I'm glad you made lots of good memories. This year my youngest was able to accompany me. I can't say without choking up how much this meant to me. She carried her Alpha Hunter. DM

stockdog, That's great. Are those Blue Grouse? Which is what we have north of us. Have yourself a good time enjoying the outdoors with your dog. DM

Hunter, Great news. Hope you enjoyed all your company associated with opening day. It's a grand affair here. My dog found these for me when I had lost heart. Man, I'm going to keep feeding that dog. DM

We hunted this evening, my daughter and I, and close friends. A bit warm at the start, but a very good evening followed. A trusty Buck 102, 70's era, was on my right hip. Best wishes to all, safe journeys and good hunting!

Liberando, hope all of you had a good time. We had all varieties of doves flying by us at one time or other. Mourning, White-wing and Collard. DM

Hunter, I've held a Browning like in your photo, with the Cutts Compensator type choke. A fine shotgun. Both my daughter and I shoot and own Browning's. I merely used my Remington today. Does the Cutts choke reduce felt recoil and give tight patterns? DM

David, that is a PolyChoke Deluxe - vintage to the gun (circa 1951) on my 16 gauge Auto-5. It patterns consistently and well, but at two chokes under the marking (i.e., I get MOD when it is set to FULL). It doesn't reduce felt recoil, but the design was intended to obliterate the fiber wads used in shells of the era - with plastic wads all it does is create a cleaning challenge. I prefer the standard PolyChoke without the slots, but this is what I have. OH

David We has both Blue and Ruffed I find that it depends on the elevation the Blues seem to stay higher. I find it just great to get out in the wood with the dogs and finding the grouse just makes it that much sweeter and I get to use the BUCK 118 that I like. Only doves we see are in the neighborhood yards. Be safe all and enjoy the time out.

David, thank you, we sure had a good time, but we didn't see too many birds. Though we've had some welcome summer rains, our part of SW OK has been very parched for several years. The birds we saw were all Mourning. Found an Ornate Box Turtle, the first I've seen of its kind. All told, a great evening being out in the open country with good friends and family. I really like this thread because I'm sensing the same camaraderie and appreciation for Buck knives in everyone's hunting experience.

Stockdog, I agree, the 118 is a great knife! I went deer hunting last year with some friends who were very experienced at all types of hunting and Buck knives. I carried my 118 and they had never seen one before. Once they examined it and saw it in action, they collectively swore that a 118 would be their next purchase!

Liberando, I hunted near Hollis, OK. one Spring. Along the salty Red River bed, looking for coyotes. I carried a 107 then. Hope you get some Fall rains. DM

Thanks David! The Red River is a shadow of its former self, at the present. And after many years of searching, I finally procured a Buck 107 of my own recently. A darn fine knife, I can see why they are so popular.

I enjoyed those pics of guns and knives. I've never done any kind of bird hunting. Even though I'm in Arkansas, I'm in the Ozark mountains so I'd have to drive a ways to do any duck hunting or get into the real good dove hunting. I have a lot of thickets on my place so the last few years, all of my gun hunting is done with an old single shot 12 gauage New England firearms shotgun. The pics of those shotguns make me want to upgrade.

Jec, In the 60's my folks took us to Queen Wilhelmina Inn on Rich Mountain. A scenic area. The shotguns shown in this topic are all old as well. My 1100 shown I bought in 1977. Ha... Thanks, DM
Here's some Whitewings with the Buck collector's 110 with D2 steel. It cuts like there's no tomorrow.
