Cabela's to open Christiana store May 1
It's almost time to get inside a retail mecca that prides itself on the great outdoors as Cabela's prepares to open its doors to Delawareans on May 1.

The long-awaited grand opening of the 110,000-square-foot store at 1100 Christiana Mall was announced Thursday and calls for a weekend celebration beginning the first Thursday in May, Cabela's said.

Celebrity appearances, family events and giveaways are on the opening agenda for the all-things hunting, fishing, camping and outdoors retailer. Festivities will get underway at 10:45 a.m., May 1, followed by an 11 a.m. official opening.

"The store's interior is being built in Cabela's next-generation layout, designed to surround customers in an outdoor-like experience," Cabela's said. "The exterior reflects Cabela's popular store model with log construction, stonework, wood siding, a large glass storefront and metal roofing."

Inside, expect to experience a walk-through aquarium, indoor archery range and archery tech room, Gun Library, Fudge Shop, Bargain Cave and mountain replica featuring North American game animals re-created in their natural habitat, Cabela's said.

The store marks a first for Delaware and spares fans an otherwise 2-hour drive to the Hamburg, Pa., location. The $3.6 billion company - which operates 50 stores across North America and plans to open an additional 23 over the next two years - has hired about 250 employees to full fill- and part-time positions at its First State store

I've been to the Cabelas in Hamburg PA twice, but it's about a 2-3 hour drive, depending on whether you take the back roads or not. Even though the store will probably be packed, I plan on heading up Memorial Day weekend to the DE store, after a hike at the Turkey Point lighthouse trail in North East MD. Even though it's supposed to be smaller than the Hamburg store, I plan on spending a long time in there. Looks like a late night ride home for me.
