opening folding knifes

thanks for some of the replies and as for the rest of the manly men, if you ever get to be 70 yrs. old, which i doubt ,you might appreciate why i ask. 36 yrs as a firefighter/paramedic

The AG Russell tool is one answer, Rough Rider also makes a knife opener but it doesn't seem as handy as the Russell Steel Thumbnail. Different aesthetic though so maybe it's more in line with what you're looking for.

Thank you for your service Firefink. Maybe try using a dime or some other small object to open the knife instead of your finger nail? Either that or trade all your stuff for modern folders that use a flipper to open.

Thank you for your service my good man.

I would personally get some of those knobbed finger covers that bankers cover their money counting fingers with. They would give extra grip without damaging the blade.

Good luck!

I have acquired a knife collection and after opening so many blades my finger nails are gone. Do they make a tool for this? I can't find anything on the internet?

Many pocketknives, especially old ones that may be jammed or junked up, are very difficult to open. I've got some here in my desk drawer I just leave open all the time 'cause they're too difficult. And it seems that some companies pride themselves on purposefully making knives with super-stiff springs *ahem, Great Eastern*.
AG Russell's Steel Thumbnail is an excellent keychain tool.
Great Eastern Cutlery makes a tool called a Blade Key designed specifically for opening stiff knives.
And I think I have a similar blade key from Hen and Rooster.

I don't get many of the responses either. Being a tough guy or hard worker makes one's fingernails stronger? :thumbdn:

Perhaps replies like he's gotten here are some of the reason he's been a member since '08 but only posted a few times.:: :(

Sir there is really great info here, please ignore the people giving you a hard time. Thank you for your lifetime of service!

Most of the ribbing is " just that" guys messing with each other, I,m sure as a firefighter you must have put up with a lot of bull, and probably the worse came from your best friends, please don,t take it as a personal insult.

Exactly - just poking fun! I had no idea I was talking to a 70 year old retired firefighter. Open mouth, insert foot.

Anyway, I hope you can find something that will work.

Firefink, just guys being guys, I'm also retired LE, this ribbing is nothing compared to,the locker room days" yep got a bunch of old knives with nail nicks that are a bear to open. I use a dime, works well.

they make an actual "screw on" thumbstud that they say works with any knife. No experience with it, but i've seen them offered in various catalouges.

I used to have one on my Buck 110. It worked great. Just remember to put some Loctite on it or it will constantly fall off.

thanks everyone for the info. just ordered a russell thumbnail. the ribbing I got from the sharp tongues was of no consequence. I spent 24 hours every third day with 10 type a personalities and we passed the time sitting around insulting each other for fun. Those guys had no idea who they were dealing with. Tip of the day. Don't pull your wee wee out
