Opening methods

There nothing wrong with wanting a knife because its "cool."

In fact, I dare say just about everyone here has bought a knife because it was cool. I have.

Bought a Chive bacause it was cool. Very good design IMO. But it was not a great user for me as I like approximately 4 inch blades.

But it was cool, as many people I showed it to believed. They too went and bought one.

From an engineering standpoint, assisted opening is kinda cool. I especially like the simpler mechanisms.

Having said that, AO is just a toy. I don't see any real world situations where you'd need a knife any faster than you could open via thumbstud or hole.

To test, I just did a little experiment. Holding the Heat in my left hand, and my BM710 in my right (I'm right handed), I could open the 710 as quickly as the Heat. Switch hands, and of course the Heat opened a little faster, but not fast enough to be of any real use.

Now this little test has prooved useful in one area. I felt MUCH more comfortable opening the Heat left handed than the 710 (a few times I couldn't even get the 710 open because I was scared my thumb would slip onto the blade). So an AO on the offside may be of some value (if you need an off hand knife for any reason).

To each his own. I'm not bashing AOs, they have their place alongside every other knife out there.

It amuses me that the grey area of legality surrounding AOs doesn't extend to Benchmade's AXIS lock.
