Opinel Carbon

I'm resurrecting this thread just to say thanks to jackknife for his "screwdriver hint" for tuning up the joint of an opinel. I tried that last weekend on mine and it worked like a charm! Smooth open/close all week even after washing it, without having to sun bake the knife to reduce swelling. Thanks for the great advice, Carl.

Don't mention it bud. Just glad I could help!

Psst, has anyone told you how to file the locking ring so it goes farther around for a better lock up?

Nope, never heard of that until I read the informative info at the link davek14 posted; thanks, guys! Don't know if I'll try filing the locking ring, since I rarely use it anyway for the cutting I've been doing (mainly food prep in the kitchen). But it's good to know about that trick and others Dave writes about. I'll have to get another Opinel or three and see if I have any creative juices flowing for doing my own customizations.

I have something called Sno-Seal Beeswax that I use on my leather gloves and boots for winter. Anyone ever try anything like that to "waterproof" and/or lubricate the pivot on an Opinel?

Yeah, using the Opinel, especially after getting used to the sardinian resolza, I almost never use the lock any more. I mean, how dangerous is that salami?

I've never used the snow seal on anything but my boots, but if you use it, let us know how it went. Use the 'ol lades blow drier to really melt it into the wood, and after set it in a glass of water to see how it does.

LOL!!:D I don't know, my wife thinks half the stuff I eat is dangerous - she won't taste it, at any rate.

Just applied some Sno-Seal to my Opinel pivot; my first impression is that it lubricated the joint really well!
I think I'll let it "cure" overnight before I try a dunk test to check if it waterproofs wood as well as leather.

That salami was obviously dangerous enough you felt the need to whip out your carry piece and slice it up! I too use an Opinel against various rogue foods. Great tool for it. Using mine, I thoroughly killed and dismembered a summer sausage and a block of smoked gouda yesterday.
